Thank You Arlen Specter!

Now We're Sure to Get the Following

We’re just about there, the magic 60 figure in the United States Senate. It’s being called a filibuster proof majority for the Democratic Party. All we need is a belated recognition of the United States Constitution and the rules of the Senate in the form of an official Senator Al Franken (D-MN) and we’re ready to rock.

Here’s what we can expect:

Surely habeas corpus will be restored in an unashamed expression of support for that centuries old protection of civil liberties.

No doubt, we’ll see a repeal of the Patriot Act. That step back to some degree of civilization is sure to come.

There will be a long overdue recognition that the first people in line for help from the government are the citizens of this great country who work overtime to just keep their heads above water.

That will happen at the same time that trillions in Wall Street welfare are stopped and replaced by actions that allow people to stay in their homes, pay for their health care, and send their children to college. No doubt about it.

We won’t be forced into mindless wars that obligate us to more deaths and the inevitable blowback from overseas adventures. Let the word go forth from Washington. The troops are coming home.

The Glass-Steagall Act will be restored and the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 will be repealed ending the enabling acts for an era of greed.

No more talk about having too many “big picture” items on the agenda to allow working men and women to organize and fight for their rights in unions.

We’ll surely mount a massive program to save us all from the looming eco catastrophes due to climate change and pollution.

Elections will be transparent, open to all, and subject to public review and verification.

We will no longer countenance wire tapping, Internet snooping, and other forms of illegal surveillance by the government.

Don Siegelman’s conviction will be overturned while Susan Lindauer and all the other victims of Bush fascism will receive apologies for the vicious government harassment visited on them.

All it takes is Arlen on board and Al ready to hop the freedom train to the promised land of a government that serves the people and public servants that know the meaning of the word servant.

There can be no doubt that those who have erred and sinned against the people will be reborn into a new life as representatives of the nation that they serve. They will cast away their Money Party sympathies and hop on board.

Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Mark Pryor (D-AR) will start voting for the working people that they represent. The 21 FISA supporting Democratic senators will take the time to read the Constitution and change their ways. The Senate Committee on Finance headed by Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) will actually investigate that $140 billion gift to banks allowed by the likely illegal Bush White House authored tax code changes. The Nelsons, Ben and Bill, along with 16 other Democratic senators will repent for their vote on that horrid bankruptcy bill.

And all of them will join in unison and say no more funding for illegal wars.

Happy days are here again. Pop the cork!

I hope this is facetious. If anything, Specter is an example of a fact that should be well known by now anyway: Dem. & Rep. are two sides of the same nonfunctional corrupt coin. This is the same dangerous/delusional thinking witnessed in the still ongoing Obamania. Washington has demonstrated, beyond any reasonable doubt, that they are in this for the big financial players (also known as: themselves). Rather than undoing all the fascist Big Brothery precedents that have been set thus far (just as often by Dem as by Rep), a “left” controlled Senate will work alongside Obama to, not only maintain business as usual, but to proceed with rigging more inequality and less civil liberty into our future.

Again, if this was a joke… it’s a good one.

Ha! Good one! The media coverage of the Specter “defection” is hilarious and is reflective of just how pathetic our “society” is.

    Ah yes, sarcasm.

It works well with those brighter than the average bit of rock.

Facetious? Can we actually spell it? Would be interesting to know if we know what it means as well …

I think if you take both jd and Miles comments you’ll have a bit more truth than either taken singly. Smokin’ facetious … isn’t THAT precious?

    F a c e t i o u s …. did it!

I too agree that the coverage of this story is dreadful. The myth of 60 Democratic Senators is meaningless. They don’t have the guts to seat Franken, which they could have done when the Minnesota Secretary of State certified the recount. They have at least 25 DLC, corporatist members of the coalition. FISA, bankruptcy etc. were all enabled by these “centerists”.

None of the items mentioned will happen with the mythical 60 vote majority including this:

“And all of them will join in unison and say no more funding for illegal wars.”

If there were any people taking this seriously, I’ll take the blame for that. Subtlety is usually not one of my traits.

End the war! Fire Geithner & Summers now.

Not to mention Single Payer Health Care. Now the Democrats and Obama have NO EXCUSE not to pass it.

See Ralph Nader’s current, informative and to-the-point column on just this – at nader.org

Dogwood, right indeed. Lets see how they roll over on this one. Maybe the party will sponsor anti single payer commercials.

They’ve got the majority but not the votes, I’m afraid. But they’ve got no excuse after turning over all that loot to Wall Street. That’s a huge wedge issue, as in wedge between the people and those who rule.

i agree, michael collins is saying that the opposite of what he is predicting will happen; or, rather, is already happening.

or to put it in a form of a question, Wld uncle be that supid to have two parties or even single senator, congressman who is not with and of the uncle?

another question, Wld uncle have a constitution that all of it cld be understood? Or, to turn it upside down, Wld uncle [ruling class] alllow a constitution that is not understood by supreme judges? And only judges? Apppointed by the very same uncle? tnx

NO EXCUSE for Democrats not passing Single Payer – not at nader.org

bozhidar or bozh, here are two sayings to answer you questions;)

“They wouldn’t let us vote if it made any difference.” (unknown but brilliant person)

“Man wouldn’t pay us if he didn’t have to.” Chris Rock

    Dogwood, thanks for the info.

In the paradigmatic words of Larson E Whipsnade (president and general manager of Whipsnade’s Circus Giganticus): “As my grandfather said before they sprung the trap: “never give a sucker an even break, or smarten up a chump.”

Sarcasm is lost on far too many. Personally, I’m thankful that I’d already finished my coffee as I’d be cleaning a monitor rather than writing this reply. In the meantime, I’m now looking forward to paradise on Earth now that the Dems are on tap to have their 60 seats in the Senate.

  14. Garrett said on April 30th, 2009 at 5:13pm #

Not to mention No Child Left Behind. Being a teacher, I know very well just how awful that crap legislation is.

“Progressives” will be thrown a few scraps to keep them in line, but no significant changes will take place.

The excuse used to be, “We don’t have the White House or 60+ Dems in the Senate.” Well, what’s the excuse now?

  15. Michael Collins said on April 30th, 2009 at 9:18pm #

James Benjamin I’m so glad you were a bit late on that coffee. A monitor is a terrible thing to lose. I thought or sure that this would be the dead giveaway: “And all of them will join in unison and say no more funding for illegal wars.” Stirring thought.

Garrett, you’ve posed the most telling question. What will their excuse be? I know who will utter it, Harry Reid. He’ll get that hang dog look and say hmmm… “We’re committed to bipartisanship, the new bipartisan ship.” You know, I can’t think of what their excuse will be. I suspect that they think that we’re so stupid, they won’t even offer an excuse. Maybe it will be, “Look this president is fighting three wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, terra), we can’t bother him with single payer.” Nah, they don’t even respect us enough to lie to us.

    garret, right,
education, or as say ‘education’ almost in all countries is designed so that mulititude of children will be left behind.
if that was all, it wldn’t be so bad but they are also left with a learned belief that americanism is great; thus, its schoollng is great; thus, if a child is at sea, it is because it is lazy. unmotivated; wants s’mthing for nothing; shld try harder and it wld become another great american. tnx

    MC,

We know the politicians are bought. I’m referring to the registered Democratic voters. I used to be one, but my eyes were opened a while back.

    bozh,

Hyper patriotism is absolutely frightening. Almost as scary as religion.
