Failed Washington-Sponsored Ecuadorean Coup Attempt

Post-9/11, Washington sponsored four coup d’etats. Two succeeded: mostly recently in Honduras in 2009 against Manuel Zelaya, and in Haiti in 2004 deposing Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Two others failed: in Venezuela in 2002 against Hugo Chavez, and on September 30 in Ecuador against Rafael Correa — so far. Two by Bush, two by Obama with plenty of time for more mischief before November 2012.

From Obama’s record so far, expect it. He continues imperial Iraq and Afghanistan wars and occupations. In addition, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Palestine, Lebanon, North Korea, and other countries are targeted, besides deploying CIA and Special Forces armies into at least 75 countries worldwide for targeted assassinations, drone attacks, and other disruptive missions.

More than ever under Bush and Obama, America rampages globally, Ecuador’s Raphael Correa lucky to survive a plot to oust (or perhaps kill) him. September world headlines explained, including by New York Times writer Simon Romero headlining, “Standoff in Ecuador Ends With Leader’s Rescue,” saying:

“Ecuadorean soldiers stormed a police hospital Thursday night in Quito where President Rafael Correa was held by rebellious elements of the police forces, and rescued him amid an exchange of gunfire….”

AlJazeera explained more in an article headlined, “Ecuador declares state of emergency,” saying:

“Coup plotters shut down airports, blocked highways, burned tires, and “rough(ed) up the president.” They also took over an airbase, parliament, and Quito streets, the pretext being a law restructuring their benefits, despite Correa doubling police wages.

In fact, Washington’s fingerprints are on another attempt against a Latin leader, some (not all) of whose policies fall short of neoliberal extremism.

A tipoff was State Department spokesman, Phillip Crowley, saying we’re “monitoring (not denouncing) the situation,” much like it refused to condemn Zelaya’s ouster, instead calling on “all political and social actors in Honduras to respect democratic norms, the rule of law, and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.” Most other Latin states demanded his “immediate and unconditional return,” whether or not they meant it.

Washington opposes Correa for Ecuador’s ties to Hugo Chavez and Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA) membership, a WTO/NAFTA alternative based on principles of:

  • complementarity, not competition;
  • cooperation, not exploitation; and
  • respect for each nation’s sovereignty, free from corporate and outside control.

Though falling short of these goals, ALBA nations, in principle, pledged:

  • to benefit and empower their citizens;
  • provide essential goods and services; and
  • achieve real grassroots economic growth to improve the lives of ordinary people and reduce poverty.

ALBA membership, however, signals opposition to US hegemony, especially its neoliberal model, dominance, dismissiveness, and one-way trade deals for the Global North over the South, the curse Latin states have endured for decades, besides earlier US-sponsored coups and belligerency.

Fast Moving Developments

Before his rescue, police spokesman Richard Ramirez told AP that “the chief of the national police, Gen. Freddy Martinez, presented Correa with his irrevocable resignation because of Thursday’s events.”

On October 1, the Russian Information Agency, Novosti headlined, “Ecuador in chaos as police put president in hospital,” saying:

Correa remained hospitalized… one person was killed and dozens injured during (street) riots.” After Ecuadorean military and special police forces rescued him, Correa told the national radio in a phone interview:

“This is a coup d’etat attempt by opposition forces. They resorted to (violence) because they will not win the election. I call on the citizens to stay calm.”

After being attacked by tear gas, he was hospitalized, then prevented from leaving when rebel police and coup supporters surrounded the building. Inside he said, “It seems that the hospital is under siege… (The) conspiracy (was) planned long ago,” and he knows where. He added, “I will leave (the hospital) as president, or they will have to carry my corpse out of here.”

His government declared a state of emergency. Flights from Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport were suspended, then resumed early October 1. In addition, scattered violence and looting was reported in several Ecuadorean cities, including the capital.

Freed by soldiers, a visibly angry Correa addressed a huge crowd of supporters from the presidential palace, saying:

Ecuadorean blood, the blood of our brothers has been needlessly spilled. You have mobilized to support the national government… the citizens’ revolution, democracy in our fatherland. When we realized we couldn’t talk and wanted to leave, they attacked the president. They threw tear gas at us, straight at our faces. They had to take me to the police hospital where they held me hostage. They wouldn’t let me leave. They shamed the institution (the police). They will need to leave the ranks.

While still captive, Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino urged supporters to “walk peacefully to the hospital, where the president is blocked by (rebel) police officers.” On arriving, they shouted, “This is not Honduras. Correa is president. Down with the coup, down with the enemies of the people.”

Ecuador remains in flux. As a result, new developments need close monitoring. Writing for the Council on Hemispheric Affairs, Andres Ochoa said:

Before the coup attempt, “Correa seemed an untouchable figure in Ecuadorian politics. However, his presidency might very well be defined by the outcome of this day, and his political projects may rest on the results.”

A Final Comment

On October 1, AFP writer Alexander Martinez headlined, “Ecuador president rescued from police uprising,” saying:

Correa “made a triumphant return to the presidential palace after loyalist troops rescued him from a police rebellion amid gunfire and street clashes that left at least two dead” and dozens wounded.

“We got him out, we got him out,” Interior Vice Minister Edwin Jarrin told AFP.

“The rescue capped a dramatic day of violence and confusion that began early Thursday” when rebel police assaulted him.

After his rescue, Correa thanked the military and a police special operations unit, saying:

“If not for them, this horde of savages that wanted to kill, that wanted blood, would have entered the hospital to look for the president and I probably wouldn’t (be) telling you this because I would have passed on to a better life.” Supporters are not grateful yet.

Commenting on developments, Latin American expert James Petras explained that Ecuador’s “ELITE MILITARY” put down the coup. In 2008, Interior Minister Gustavo Jahlk “denounced” Washington “for subverting police.”

At the same time, there’s “legitimate protest by trade unions against Correa’s austerity plan, which the right exploited, seeing the pro-Correa forces divided.” In addition, some NGOs and “supposed Indian groups who tacitly supported the coup are on the take from America’s National Endowment of Democracy (NED) and USAID,” the usual suspects with a long disruptive history throughout the region and beyond.

Their operatives weren’t on the streets visibly, but they expressed no opposition to coup plotters. Instead, “Their statement called for the government’s replacement,” meaning it’s Obama administration policy — not for Correa’s domestic policies, says Petras. It’s for his “ties with US arch enemy Chavez and ALBA.”

Events remain fluid and fast moving.

The “coup” claim doesn’t make a lot of sense. A coup takes planning and leaders and a small number of plotters. The police were protesting against austerity measures and the most plausible explanation is that this was a demonstration that got out of hand. If they had wanted to stage a coup, they’d have struck suddenly, when no one was expecting them. Once a demonstration was planned, there was necessarily going to be huge numbers of police and soldiers on hand just to police the demonstration. If this was a “coup”, then the plotters were so absurdly incompetent as to be a threat to nobody and if this was a CIA plot, then the CIA are a bunch of incompetent idiots who are also a threat to nobody! By the way, were the demonstrations in against austerity measures Greece also a failed CIA coup?

And there was no israeloamerican involvement in the Honduran coup, either. Right mikey?

That’s the exact propaganda line the zionist run media is using to cover up israeloamerican involvement in this failed coup. What a coincidence, eh? “Coups don’t happen, it’s just things getting a little out of hand in countries with guvs we don’t like. Because their people really, really do hate their popular governments and want to be powerless slaves to foreign owned oligarchs”. Isn’t that right, mikey?

    From Correa’s speech:

“They shamed the institution (the police). They will need to leave the ranks.”

I hope he acts on that and does start cleaning the quislings out. That’s really the only way to stop the israeloamerican corruption. As with gangrene, the rot needs to be removed totally, or it continues to kill from within.

Apart from the propaganda in the zionist run media and that of s.w.a.r.m., the rest of the world knows a coup attempt when they see it:

    Ecuador mourns coup attempt victims

    Oct 2, 2010 17:07 Moscow Time

The Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa has declared three days of national mourning for the victims of last Thursday’s attempted coup.

Four people died and nearly 200 received injuries in a day of unrest after soldiers and police angered by pay cuts seized barracks and bases, blocked Quito Airport, injured the President and locked him up in military hospital. Mr Correa was eventually freed by loyal troops.

The authorities are after the masterminds of the mutiny.

Some people have not noticed that ‘zionism’ is an integral part of fascism and land theft, oppression, torture, killing innocent people, deceiving; thus, natch, is also evil.
One cannot separate ‘zionism’ from al of it.
Netanyahu is as much fascist as is obama, merkel, brown, et al. But it does seem that US fascists [mafiosos] are quite happy about people only blaming ‘zionism’.

I’d like to know what evidence there is for Israeli involvement in this fiasco. Or, for that matter, American involvement.

“Considering the US has had an interventionist policy in Latin America for over a century now I’m curious as what dynamic Zionism had introduced in this situation.”

From reading Chomsky, I’ve learned that Israel has acted as a mercenary state in the service of American imperialism in South and Central America by arming and training repressive militaries in the region when it was too embarrassing for Washington to do so. However, this was back in the 1970s and 1980s; I don’t know of any such involvement in later years. Israel seems to have its hands busy with its lunatic actions in the Middle East; engaging in incompetent coup attempts on the other side of the world would seem to be another extravagance it can ill afford. But who knows. I’m not saying that Israel isn’t involved in this; I’m only saying that I’ve not seen any evidence to suggest that it is.

And can we please drop this obsession with Zionism? Israeli aggression is one component of AMERICAN aggression, not the other way around.

Sorry, but that’s not an argument, only a completely baseless slander. I’d like to know 1) how one could even imply support for Israeli aggression (which is what I called it, as well as mentioning “Israel’s lunatic actions in the Middle East”, which makes it a bit difficult to sustain the charge that I’m a Zionist, let alone a “Zionazi”), and 2) what “blather” I’m supposed to have engaged in. Perhaps you should actually read what I wrote, and slowly so that you don’t skip the relevant bits. Being Latin American myself, I’ve always been rather interested in the history of the place and how fascist regimes were backed by the United States and others, including in my native Uruguay.

The Left doesn’t need people like you. You’re a drag on our ideals of justice, truth, and honest discussion, and I don’t want you on our team. A totalitarian minded simpleton like yourself is more apt to form part of the backbone of a fascist movement, not a social justice one.

    Quote:

in response to comments interspersed with this context:

Israel has acted as a mercenary state in the service of American imperialism in South and Central America by arming and training repressive militaries in the region when it was too embarrassing for Washington to do so.”

“Israel seems to have its hands busy with its lunatic actions in the Middle East

“Being Latin American myself, I’ve always been rather interested in the history of the place and how fascist regimes were backed by the United States and others, including in my native Uruguay.”

So, let me get this straight: you believe that “typical zionazi blather” consists of denouncing Israeli and American war crimes? Which would mean that Palestinian peace activists and women and children are Zionazis as well. Interesting. Make sure you go and tell them that in person, if you’re brave enough (which you aren’t).

Now, tell everyone you’re not an idiot, and see how that goes for you. Let me know.

“How that organ trading coming along, luis?”

No idea what you’re talking about. Luis,I think mary has provided a first taste of the facts concerning a Zionazi role in this failed coup. I’m sure others will surface, but be suppressed by the thought controlling sewer of the Zionazi dominated mainstream media. I think that you must bear in mind that, so great is Zionazi control of the US political system, and so determined are the Zionazis to use the US as a puppet to bring about their dream of global domination, based on a fundamentalist interpretation of their divine status as Chosen People, that there will always be a Zionazi element in every US imperial crime. The US Empire must be preserved, which means destroying every non-compliant regime, by any means available, and the Zionazis, through their money power and ruthless, murderous, and thoroughly vicious military-intelligence network, have very great means indeed. I think that it is simply a fact that the US acts these days primarily as a catspaw for the Zionazis, and only incidentally as a force of control, coercion and intimidation for its own, goyish, elites.

  22. Luis Cayetano said on October 3rd, 2010 at 8:05am #

So let me get this right, Mulga: it’s because of “Zionazis” that the US has done the following:

    ” * invaded Grenada in 1983
    * tried to overthrow the government of Suriname in 1982-4
    * overthrew the government of Fiji in 1987
    * invaded Panama in 1989
    * overthrew the government of Afghanistan in the 1980s-90s
    * suppressed the left in El Salvador 1980-92
    * overthrew the government of Nicaragua in 1990
    * supported the overthrow of Aristide in Haiti in 1991
    * overthrew the government of Bulgaria in 1991
    * overthrew the government of Albania in 1992
    * invaded Somalia in 1993
    * has supported the right-wing government of Colombia for the past 20 years
    * bombed Yugoslavia for 78 days in 1999
    * suppressed a leftist coup in Ecuador in 2000
    * invaded Afghanistan in 2001
    * has tried to destabilize the Chavez government in Venezuela for the past 10 years
    * overthrew the government of Haiti in 2004″

Yes, because it’s not like US imperialism would have any other reason to do these things, well before the establishment of the Zionist state. Note my sarcasm.

Israel isn’t America’s puppet master, and never has been. The Zionist lobby is but one of several very powerful lobbies in Washington. Two others are the corporate lobby and the Saudi lobby (and we can find myriad examples of presidents co-towing to their demands as well, so why not claim that they hold the reins of power?). Convergence of interest isn’t sufficient to demonstrate a master-servant relationship, and when such a relationship can’t be shown, the sensible default view is to see the more powerful player (the United States in this case) as the one that is largely in charge and that sets the general framework within which the smaller partner can act. Israel is America’s spoiled child in the Middle East, who has grown up to think that it can do whatever it likes, and that daddy will always come to its aid no matter what. That’s largely correct, minus the occasional half-arsed slap on the wrist from Washington when Israeli thumps its chest.

In Latin America, the US doesn’t need Israel’s permission to do anything, though it can certainly recruit its services (as it has in the past in El Salvador and elsewhere). In the Middle East, Israel can ONLY act because it has the assurance that the US will allow it. The relationship is not only asymmetrical, it’s asymmetrical in precisely the opposite direction you suggest.

So your thesis is rather ridiculous and contemptible, and collapses upon cursory examination. Israel is a strategic asset, not the centre of gravity around which all American policy revolves. It’s one component in the imperial grand strategy – an important one, but not the only one. To think otherwise is wank-headed, ignorant, and represents a complete failure to understand the dynamics and political economy of imperialism. It’s also completely hypocritical, for it conveys the stupid and false notion that if support for Israel can be cut off, then all will by hunky-dory and the US government will stop engaging in aggression and mayhem and start hugging puppies (because that’s clearly what ALL large powers do when they’re not serving Zionists interest. Again, more sarcasm).

3bancan, please stop giving the impression that you’re a deranged rot-box.

Let’s recall that US had to utterly destroy a culture which–according to reports by historians– had no police, army, jails, govt, laws, lawyers, special advisers, taxes, ‘schools’ [winning hearts and minds of children for the greater good of the ruling class], flag, constitution, rich people, ‘religions’, but had guidance-teaching-tutoring and also sharing-caring.
And we did and still do. And look what we do to each other and aliens!

Once priests arrived in americas and saw such an excellent exemplar, they knew they had to utterly destroy. What?? U do not even have a religion, spoke the priests and other ‘educators’ with scorn and derision. How can u be so primitive and not have god in ur lives and us priests and ‘educators’ to guard and make u civilized.

But the highly civilized folks in americas did not know that very same words were spoken by priest millennia ago to other ‘primitives’. and stared them dwn just like the ‘indians’.

Mind u, they were doomed; the greatest criminal minds wld not tolerate any civilization and which they destroyed already millennia ago.

Yes, we were also very civilized just like ‘indians’ once were! But not any longer i am told. Now they too have rulers, jails, ‘experts’ et al.

Canaanites, on the other hand were much diff than ‘indians’. They were also extremely uncivilized. i am not going to get into what happened to them after hebbrews, another highly brutal people to one another and aliens, arrived incanaan or if indeed they ever did.
But euro-asians with the cult were also much uncivilized to each other and aliens.
And some ‘jews’ are imbued by hatred towards ‘jews’ because they were probably severely abused by them.
If one wld read, say, atzmon, only ‘jews’ are on his mind. And i wld bet that if ‘jews’ made amends to him, he’d become just like chomsky.
And at least some ‘jews’ knew how to win chomsky’s heart and mind. And they did.
    Lesson? Don’t trust any ‘jew’.
Let herhim first renounce ‘jewishness’ as r.novak did. He discarded the delusion of being a ‘jew’! tnx

Well, i never unlink any ‘zionist’ from any crime committed on this earth! Why?
A ‘zionist’ is as much a fascist as was truman, jefferson, nixon, kennedy, clinton, or obama.
So, what one fascist does anywhere is fully supported by every fascist. The trap appears in believing a label and not what it represents.
And some people make it worse by applying verbal brilliance, namecalling, throwing more labels at people, cherry picking facts or lying by omission.
Every piece by a columnist i read , contains such artifices and most likely by design and not ignorance.

Hey, it is not my fault that ‘jews’ even hoodwinked bolsheviks and me at one time.
But as i began to looked little deeper and casting widest look possible, i learned a lot.
Just remember, dear folks, that history–when it comes to what it teaches us– is not a mystory— it is crystal clear!
Of necessary and absolutely certain truth, we have at a point in time all the knowledge we need.
Remember the ‘indians’? What they knew was sufficient for their well-being and survival. tnx

    Luis, yes,
Salient facts not only show, but prove it is all one skein of wool. Separating ‘zionism’ or, rather its doings, from colombian, UK, russian, french, et all doings is only possible on verbal level.

  30. Unga_Khan said on October 3rd, 2010 at 11:04am #

Luis, you must keep in mind that the majority of posters on DV subscribe to the simplistic view that Zionist motives underlie all of the United States’ foreign policy actions of the past 100 years, even in such far-removed places as El Salvador and Cambodia. You’ll notice it’s usually difficult to find a comment that doesn’t include the word “Zion”. While as Mary’s post shows there are often varying strengths of Israeli or Zionist ties to the assorted coups and military actions of the US, to distill it all down to Israeli influence is patently absurd. This ignores the greater economic and geopolitical interests native to the United States that much more simply and completely explain her actions. The Zionist oppression of the Palestinian people, and their constant warmaking in the Middle East, are without question among the greatest outrages of the past century. The Zionist lobby wields such great influence that it has made the USA sign an effective suicide pact with Israel (although this is not surprising given both nations’ sociopathic foreign policy tendencies). But to depict this relationship as the driving force behind ALL of America’s actions is a gross oversimplification made so that weak minds won’t have to contend with deeper truths. Now watch me be branded as a Zionazi.

  31. Unga_Khan said on October 3rd, 2010 at 11:39am #

Luis, you also raise a great point- does anyone seriously believe that if Israel did not exist, and if Zionists wielded no influence over American foreign policy, then none of the imperialist adventures of the United States would have occurred, and America would truly be at peace with the world? Are posters trying to ascribe Zionist motives to the Spanish-American War, for instance, or to the Monroe Doctrine, which has been used as a justification for American intervention in the politics of sovereign Latin American countries for over a century? Granted, the concept of Manifest Destiny shares many parallels with Zionism, but then again so did the concept of Lebensraum.

You are an obvious ziofascist hasbarat and you are not fooling any one here. This isn’t huff-puff, demo. underground or freerepublic. You’re wasting your time and giving people more reason to despise you zionists and the duplicity that you represent.

Mulga Mumblebrain said on October 3rd, 2010 at 6:35am

Exactly. The israelis got into Latin America in the role of a “u.s. asset”, but as zionists are the dominant power block in the fascist u.s. establishment, anything the u.s. does is something the zionists give their seal of approval to. And these “american” zionists, use their control in america to increase israel’s connections around the world. This is what has been happening in Latin America. All of the repressive puppet guvs in Latin America have been very heavily infiltrated by israeli/zionist quislings and one of the things local liberation forces do soon after booting the fascists from power is sever or greatly weaken relations with israel. They do this more than they do it with the usa. Look at Venezuela now or Nicaraugua back in the 80’s. The people of Latin America also despise the israelis more than americans and don’t see israel as just a pawn of america doing its dirty work where american political hands are tied. They see israeli influence in their countries as an independent danger in it’s own right and take steps more severe against israel than they do the usa.

    Latin America in Israel’s crosshairs
    Saturday, August 8, 2009 – 10:00

The following article is abridged from a July 29 statement by the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall group

Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman has wrapped up a 10-day tour through South America, the first of its kind for more than two decades. His trip was aimed at launching a new direction for Israeli foreign policy.

The people of Brazil and Argentina met him with loud street protests, denouncing him as an emblem of Israeli racism, fascism and colonialism. People have refused to play the quiet host to members of a regime that for more than 60 years has kept Palestinian refugees from returning to their homes, oppressing the remaining population and developing ever more extreme forms of repression and apartheid.

The brutal massacre in Gaza at the beginning of this year, and the ongoing construction of the illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian land, are but two of the issues adding to the perception of Israel as a pariah state by ordinary people across the world.

However. Israel’s new focus on developing links with South America also forces the continent to make fundamental choices regarding its own aspirations and alignments.

Israel’s recently strengthened interest in the region is partially motivated by the fact that 21% of Israeli exporters have announced losses due to European boycotts. To offset this, Israel has developed much more vital and strategic interests in South America as well as Africa.

Until recently, Israel’s support for neoliberalism and US intervention in Latin America has been mainly aimed at ingratiating the regime with the US administration, on whose political and financial backing Israel depends. This allowed Israel to limit the influence of the Latin American liberation movements, who feel a strong attachment to the Palestinian struggle.

For Israel, a colonial state built on the expulsion and repression of the indigenous population, the rise of anti-colonial and liberating forces anywhere in the world is a potential threat.

During decades of US military intervention and backing to fascist dictatorships across the Latin American region, Israel provided training to the death squads of the dictatorships. This opened a large market for Israeli arms and intelligence industries, but was rarely accompanied by a comprehensive policy in trading agreements.

This is changing radically. In times of global economic crisis and contracting markets in Europe and North America, where successes for the boycott Israel movement are compounding Israel’s difficulties, finding new trading partners becomes crucial.

Large-scale expansion of markets in the Arab and Muslim world is ruled out. Even where governments are coaxed into stopping boycotts and sanctions, such as in Egypt or Jordan, public opinion bars Israeli investments and products from penetrating the markets.

Latin America, and especially Brazil and Argentina, are a potential life buoy for Israeli products. It is therefore no surprise that during his tour Lieberman constantly reiterated the need for the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc to ratify the free trade agreement (FTA) with Israel, signed in 2008. Mercosur members include Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Lieberman also held meetings with local business communities in order to push for further economic cooperation with Israel.

However, for the region’s people, Israel has nothing new to offer. Israeli arms and military training are still killing Latin Americans. Colombia is probably the biggest recipient of Israeli arms and training.

Colombian paramilitary leader and indicted drug trafficker Carlos Castao admitted: “I learned an infinite amount of things in Israel, and to that country I owe part of my essence, my human and military achievements.”

In Brazil, Israel is still actively involved in the repression of the people. Amnesty International is campaigning to ask the state of Rio de Janeiro to stop using the Caveirao, the armoured transport vehicle imported from Israel, to intimidate whole communities and kill indiscriminately.

While the entire American continent has isolated the current regime in Honduras, after the overthrow of the legitimate president, the leader of the coup has announced Israeli backing for his government.

Worse, Israeli diplomacy is designed to effectively block South America’s strategic and long-standing efforts to develop South-South relations, such as the creation of Mercosur, the establishment of the Bank of the South and diplomatic efforts to create special relationships such as the IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) initiative.

The strengthened relations with the Arab world and the energy producers of the Middle East are strategic ties that may allow the global South to play a stronger role in world politics and to create a more just world order. Israeli diplomatic efforts are working counter to all these projects.

In fact, Lieberman’s visit to South America, and Israel’s new foreign policy strategy, force a choice on the governments and people of South America, which goes far beyond solidarity with Palestine:will South American politics move forward in constructing a new continental and global order based on democracy, human rights and mutual solidarity or will it fall pray to those that are working against the emancipation of Latin America and the Global South?

The protests during Lieberman’s visit show where the people stand. They show that those that have built a colonial state on the destruction of the Palestinian people can never be allies of democratic and progressive countries.

In fact, the choice of countries on Lieberman’s agenda was probably simple — not many other South American states would have hosted the racist minister.

Only in Brazil, Peru and Colombia did the heads of state meet with Lieberman.

We hope that the recent victories won by the people of Latin America will translate into imposing popular demands to reject Israel on the governments that still welcome Lieberman.

Palestinian civil society has repeatedly asked South American states not to ratify free trade agreements with Israel — as such agreements will finance the oppression and dispossession of the Palestinian people.

This is the yard stick by which the world should measure South American politics. If Mercosur accepts an FTA with Israel, any rhetoric of human rights and democracy will be empty words.

Refusing it, South America can open a new chapter in the history of cooperation among the global South and the struggle for Palestinian emancipation.

What has been slowly happening in Latin America is zionists have been gradually replacing the traditional american control in the region with their own control apparatus. Just like in the usa, israeli owned/connected business are being used to gain control of important assets in Latin American countries. From the usual media and economic sectors to internal security. See this article that mentions a few of these changes:

Israel’s Worrisome Presence in Latin America

During the years of the “hot war” in Latin America, Israel had a notorious lethal presence in the region. They sent mercenaries, intelligence advisors, torture instructors, and people versed in other savage interrogation methods and selective killings. Israel also sent thousands of tons of weaponry.

In Guatemala, for instance, of the almost 200,000 victims, two-thirds died under fire from Galil rifles or Uzi machineguns; or by bombs dropped by Araba or Pilatus airplanes. Isreali experts also helped set up the telecommunications system of the Guatemalan army. And Israel brought the technology to assemble the Kusuco semi-armored vehicle for troop transport.

The long arm of Israel was felt throughout the rest of Latin America. They teamed up with extreme right military leaders in their effort to wipe out all progressive elements of society, killing thousands of young people in the name of anti-communism.

As of the 1980s, the Israeli presence in Latin America was so disguised that it was one of the best kept secrets, although not all traces had been erased.

Many Latin American countries are still a major market for Israel’s military industry. Throughout the region, there is a proliferation of private security companies which are rooted in Israel, like Global CST, part of the Mikal Group and rated as the second largest arms manufacturer in Israel. Global CST has signed a 10 million dollar agreement to train the Peruvian army; and it claimed responsibility for the rescue operation of former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt.

Global CST is headed by retired General Israel Ziv, former chief of operations of the Israeli army and an active member of the fascist organization Task Force on Future Terrorism and on Fighting International Terrorism. In 2008, Ziv was hired as an advisor for Colombia’s former Defense Minister, today’s president-elect Juan Manuel Santos, following the purchase of 24 F-21 Kfir fighter-bombers to supposedly combat drug trafficking and insurgency.

Just a few minutes after take off, these planes could be flying over neighboring Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and even Nicaragua.

Another interesting case is that of the Israeli company SIA, which stands for Security and Intelligence Advising. According to its website, the company was founded by retired security and intelligence experts from various elite units of Israel’s armed forces.

That company provides espionage services, interventions, wire tapping, and other such services to governments all around the world. It also organizes courses, workshops and seminars on security, antiterrorism and intelligence methods for private companies.

Its presence in Latin America has been widely documented, including some of the scandals it has been involved in.

Now, Israel is not content with just having its policemen and military in the region. Spurred by the global economic crisis, they have their eyes on the Latin American market. That was one of the reasons for the 2009 Latin American tour by Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

This pattern of zionist/israeli takeover is pretty much the same everywhere. Zionist assets move in and gain important influence toeholds. They then use that influence to expand into other areas of importance, gradually getting more power until one day those who thought they were in control of the country wake up and find themselves at the mercy of ziofascism, inc. Much like the usa is now.

Thank you for the links hayate. Of course the Israeli penchant for arms dealing is no secret, but if they’ve been attempting to make greater inroads into S America in recent years it makes sense they would want to foment conflict and right-wing militaristic governments. Tack that up alongside traditional US imperialistic designs on the whole of Latin America. You do much more to support your case by giving actual information than by calling everyone you disagree with a Ziofascist right off the bat- in fact with those tendencies prevalent among the left it’s little wonder we can’t get our acts together on any issue.

Another way the zionists/israelis spread their control over a country is through the illegal drug trade. Zionists/israelis control the Jewish mafia and the Jewish mafia is the dominant force in organised crime and is very intimately intertwined with the rest of the zionist power configuration. This provides access to “the underground” in a country. A most valuable access that can be used, and is used, for all sorts of non-drug related ops, such as spy infiltration, false flag terrorism and various other things like control of local, and not so local, officials/elites through bribery/blackmail. The israelis/zionists have an intimate association with the Latin American illegal drug “business”:

    October 1989, Page 12, 43

Special Report What Israelis Know and Americans Don’t About the Drug Triangle: Colombia, the US and Israel By Israel Shahak

It is well-known in the United States, indeed both the Administration and the media proclaim it from the housetops, that Colombia and Panama supply, directly and indirectly, a hefty part of the illegal drugs which have become the scourge of American society. What is still largely unknown to the US public-because most negative affairs concerning Israel tend to be covered up by the American media-is the extent of Israeli influence in those two Latin American states.

An example is the involvement of Israelis, who may have some Israeli government backing, in an important aspect of this hellish business, namely the laundering of US drug money back to the drug bosses of Colombia and Panama, despite all the well-publicized efforts of US authorities to intercept it.

Oddly, citizens of Israel are better informed about this because of two advantages they enjoy over citizens of the US: the Hebrew press, in spite of some recent decline in standards,, remains far more open and free to describe disgraceful affairs in which Israel, Israelis and American Jews are involved. Such peculiarly American institutions as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its allies do not enjoy in Israel the power that they wield in the US. The consequence is that much more of the truth about Israeli roles in the drug affairs of the United States, and the role of those American affairs in the Israeli economy, is known to Israelis than to Americans.

After direct US government financial support of about $3 billion a year to Israel, the single most important source of Israeli income derives from the export of weapons and so called “security knowledge” (including, for example, the efficient training of death squads). The value of such exports amounted officially to $1.5 billion in 1988. In reality, the sum is probably even larger. In 1988, fully one third of this Israeli “security support,” worth half a billion dollars, went to one country only, namely Colombia.

With such quantities involved, Israeli “security exports” had achieved a near monopoly in Colombia by 1988, and this has continued in 1989. Nearly all of the weapons and “security knowledge” imported during the past few years into Colombia, from airplanes to azis, were made in Israel. During the same time Israeli influence was growing in Colombia, exports of Colombian drugs to the United States grew as well. One cannot avoid at least a suspicion that both phenomena are connected. Noriega’s Right-Hand Man

A similar situation exists with regard to Panama. The right-hand man of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, and a person who apparently had a hand in putting Noriega in power, is a senior ex-Mossad man, Mike Harari, who has filled Panama with Israeli connections. Noriega has been accused by American authorities of drug trade on a large scale. One can assume that in a dictatorial regime like Noriega’s, Harari is as involved in drugs as the dictator himself. But who stands behind Harari?

Since this is a case of a former senior operative of Mossad, it would have been reasonable to expect at least a verbal condemnation of Harari from at least one of the many Israeli ministers who make such frequent speeches about “the danger of the international terrorism” to American audiences. Yet none have ever found the time to condemn Harari, or discuss his alliance with Noriega, or Israeli involvement in Colombia, with their tame American interlocutors.

What is more, it has been reported in Israel, but not in the United States, that Harari, who often visits Israel and meets with many of the most important Israeli leaders, recently received, after US opposition to Noriega was well-known, the honorary rank of colonel from the Israeli army.

Recently, reports broke in Israel and the US about a whole group of well-connected former Israel officers who had provided “security advice” to one group of Colombian drug lords, whom the group described as farmers of right-wing opinions.

The head of the Israel group, kibbutz-born Colonel Yair Klein, serves, in addition to his Colombian capacity, as the active commander of the war room of the Israeli chief of staff.

I can predict that mainstream American media will not rush to print this, although it clearly would be of intense interest to the American public! It also is interesting to learn that Col. Klein was paid in the United States for his services in Colombia. He also was paid in cash. Although the sums involved were large (one report claimed it was $800,000), he did not put the money in a bank-one assumes that he had his reasons-nor did he contravene US laws by taking the cash out of the United States. Instead, he left the money with a member of a well-known network of ultra-pious Jews in New York, who transferred the money to Israel. The Hebrew press has voiced the natural suspicion that Yair Klein was paid with money obtained through the sale of drugs in the US by his employers. Was his the only such case?

Another network in the United States, headed by two Israelis, Adi Tal and Dov Feldman, was recently exposed in Edison, NJ, apparently more by chance than by design. It engaged in large-scale laundering of Colombian drug money on both the East and West coasts, routing in back to Colombia via Israel.

In this case as well, several members escaped to Israel. The trial of the remainder, according to the Hebrew newspaper Hadashot, presented some curious features. Using American Jews

First, it became apparent that the Israelis who headed the gang secured the help of many otherwise respectable American Jews by telling them the money was intended for the work of Mossad in Panama and Colombia.

As a result, a rabbi in Seattle was convicted of receiving some of the money, depositing it in small amounts in many different accounts in Seattle, and then transferring it to a bank in a very small Israeli town, Kiryat Ono. From there, it was transferred to a well-known Colombian drug trader through a Panamanian bank.

When the gang was brought to trial, the New Jersey court permitted a lawyer from Tel Aviv to represent the accused. He did his job very well. Those of the accused who had not escaped to Israel received very light sentences. The rabbi from Seattle got off with one month of detention. The sum which he was convicted of transferring personally to Israel was $18,300,000, of which $13,600,000 found its way to Panama. The US media, apparently, was too busy covering “international terror” to report this case of Israeli laundering of drug money from the US to Colombia.

This is attributable to the fact that American political life is terrorized to such an extent by AIPAC and similar bodies, and to the continuous attacks by American Jewish organizations on the American media. Presumably readers of Washington Report are familiar with the tremendous harm that this state of affair does to all human beings (including Israelis) in the Middle East, as well as American interests there.

Because the Israeli connection with Colombia and Panama, and the drug industry based in those countries, has such dire effects on the United States, it is not only the Middle East, but American society itself that is jeopardized by activities of the “pro-Israeli lobby” in the United States.

What happened in Latin America before the neo-cons took power was still worse than what is happening today. It is just an extension of previous imperialist policies. Calling it “Zionism” because they hawks in power are also Zionists is completely misleading.

Thus a contradiction appears: unconditional support for israel but not ‘jews’ who also support israel by money and serving in IOF!
Even biden declared that he’s a ‘zionist’. judging by the silence in congress about and its unconditional support for israel, other congress people think the same way.
Suppose all this is just dissembling? Can really anyone believe anything pols say– they always leave out important information.
Since jews are indeed the best robbers around, they must have enough money to give away.

ZIONIST TROLLS WHO INFECT THE INTERNET

September 30, 2009 at 10:11 (Extremism, Internet, Israel, zionism)

    WRITTEN BY GREG FELTON
    Canadian Arab News

If you have ever visited a blog or on-line discussion group on the Middle East you have doubtless had the misfortune to run into them.

They are known by the language they use: depraved sexual insults, bile, bigotry, threats, disinformation and character assassination. That’s right: I’m talking about “hasbarats,” Zionist trolls who infect the Internet with hasbara, pro-Israel propaganda. Of course, mainstream media hasbarats have been around for decades, as have “hasbaratchiks,” fifth-columns in foreign governments who subvert national policies to serve Israel. The Internet, though, is the latest, some might say the greatest, propaganda playground, and Israel cannot cope with factual, passionate, well-documented stories that expose its war crimes and unrepentant criminality.

If you’ve come across a hasbarat, on-line or otherwise, you have learned that no amount of reasoned argument or intellectual maturity has any effect. That’s because hasbarats don’t care if they come across as ignorant, obnoxious, nasty or inane. All that matters for them is sabotaging criticism of Israel and support for Muslims. They’re like anti-intellectual stink bombs: designed to cause maximum discomfort but have little if any real power.

This deliberate proliferation of on-line hasbarats raises two points. The first concerns why anyone would spend hours a day to prostitute themselves for Israel. Money, of course. Ilan Shturman, deputy director of the Israeli foreign ministry’s hasbara department (!), told an Israeli business newspaper in July that US$150,000 had been allocated for the first stage of a campaign to seed the Internet with hasbarats:

“Our people will not say: ‘Hello, I am from the hasbara department of the Israeli foreign ministry and I want to tell you the following.’ Nor will they necessarily identify themselves as Israelis. They will speak as net-surfers and as citizens, and will write responses that will look personal but will be based on a prepared list of messages that the foreign ministry developed.”

Luis, you must keep in mind that the majority of posters on DV subscribe to the simplistic view that Zionist motives underlie all of the United States’ foreign policy actions of the past 100 years, even in such far-removed places as El Salvador and Cambodia.

This is clearly a strawman. I have no idea whether or not anyone here subscribes to whether Zionism has influenced U.S. Foreign Policy for the “past 100 years” but it is obvious that Zionism has greatly influenced U.S. policy since 1948 which would make that 62 years. You can even go back to 1932 with the election of FDR making that a total of 78 years.

However Zionism clearly has been on top of influencing U.S. policy since the 1960 with the rise of AIPAC and the FIRE sector. It was evident in the Clinton Administration and the advent of PNAC and especially throughout the Bush II Administrations.

Therefore this is beyond “simplistic” and the “Left” (especially Chomsky) has been complicit in covering up these facts and empirical evidence of the influence of Zionism in the U.S.

This article was written before the fate of the coup was known. It’s about what happened that day in Ecuador from a Venezuelan pov.

Venezuela: “Only Ecuadorans Can Neutralise Coup Attempt”

    By Tamara Pearson

    (excerpts)

    Events in Ecuador

This morning police forces in Quito, Ecuador, took over strategic sites, including an airbase, airports and parliament. President Correa immediately went to the military base to work out a solution. Police claimed they were protesting a law passed on Wednesday that allegedly would reduce their work benefits.

Correa argued that his government had doubled police wages and that rather the law just restructured the benefits.

He also denounced that ex-President Lucio Gutierrez, who, following large protests, was removed from office by a vote of the Ecuadorian congress in 2005, was behind the protest and using it to justify a coup.

Police forces attacked Correa with tear gas and the president was hospitalised shortly after in a military hospital, which coup forces subsequently surrounded. Since then he has not been able to leave.

Supporters have gathered around the presidential palace, and the Ecuadoran government has declared a state of emergency.

In a nationally televised press conference, Ecuador’s top military officials declared their support for the constitutional order of Ecuador. The top commander, General Ernesto González, demanded the police cease their subversive activities. However, the military has yet to intervene to end the police’s occupations, and only Ecuadoran civilians have taken to the streets to confront the police.

The coup attempt is not the first against an ALBA country, countries which challenge US domination in Latin America. In June 2009, Honduras, an ALBA member at the time, was subject to a coup d’état that forced its president Manuel Zelaya from power. In 2004, a coup similar to the one in Honduras was carried out in Haiti with US backing. In 2002 Venezuela was also subject to a coup, but a huge mobilisation by Venezuelans combined with military support for Chavez, defeated the coup.

Venezuelan Opposition Dismiss Ecuador Coup Attempt

    By Tamara Pearson

    (excerpts)

Merida, October 1st 2010 (Venezuelanalysis.com) – Some Venezuelan opposition press tried to portray yesterday’s coup attempt in Ecuador as a farce or a ‘show’, while Venezuelan government officials expressed satisfaction with the defeat of the attempt. The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) decided on measures should there be another coup attempt in the region.

Venezuelan opposition press coverage of the coup attempt

Venezuelan private television media supported the aggressions against the public channel TV Ecuador during the coup attempt yesterday and characterised the attempt itself as a ‘show’ or drama, AVN argued today.

Yesterday police in the capital and other major cities of Ecuador took over strategic sites such as airports and parliament, allegedly as a protest to a law passed on Wednesday that affected their working conditions. President Rafael Correa tried to talk to one protest, was hit by tear gas, went to a police hospital where he was detained by the police. Later, at around 10pm, Ecuadorian military managed to rescue Correa.

During the coup attempt police and those aligned with them also broke into the offices of TV Ecuador. The government had ordered that all stations transmit the content of TV Ecuador and the other state owned channel Gama TV. The police tried to take the station off air.

Host of the program Alo Ciudadano (Hello Citizen) on Venezuelan opposition television station Globovision, Nitu Perez, said the attacks on TV Ecuador were just the reactions of a “group of annoyed people” and “it needs to be understood that these things happen when all the democratic means for expression are shut down”, AVN reported.

Journalist Nelson Bocaranda, who works with a variety of opposition print, radio, and television, wrote on his Twitter account that, “[Ecuadorian President Rafael] Correa is marvellous as an actor. He sells himself as a defenceless victim and honest”.

He also wrote an article titled “The interrogators of the Ecuadorian operetta” where he accused Correa of wanting to increase his popularity and said Correa was copying the “system used by Chavez to control… his country”.

Anonymous Twitter account @vvperiodista, likely managed by the private television channel Venevision, said, “The show by Correa didn’t become a ‘self coup’, [rather it] was a dangerous ‘self kidnapping’”. Later, when Correa was addressing the crowd outside the presidential palace, the account called the day a “Bolivarian soap opera”.

From those 2 reports of how the events unfolded, one can see the depth of the planning and how various players were coordinated together to play their respective roles. From among the plotters inside Ecuador, one can see how they took over important institutions in a pre-planned manner. From israeloamerican media outside Ecuador, one can see how they played their part to misdirect scrutiny of those behind the crimes. From the Jewish zionist run media in the usa, to their subordinates in the Venezuelan opposition media and probably their other Latin American media assets, as well, to the zionist trolls s.w.a.r.m.ing the net. They were all on programme with the same exact message – “this was not a coup, just a riot, a minor locally initiated incident”.

Now why would all these critters be running with the same exact line of disinformation? It’s the unification of their propaganda efforts, from the macro scale of corporate media machine right on down to pathetic, friendless, shut-in, lardarses spamming websites to disrupt them, that gives the game away.

The great advantage the zionists have brought to this freakshow is their ability to co-opt opposition. When it was mostly just run of the mill corporate fascists and their pet national security services running the show, the propaganda was amateur in comparison to now. So was their ability to infiltrate and manipulate political opposition (If one has ever seen training manuals and operational reports from these guys, it’s like it’s being done by teenagers and the “don’t mingle with the lower class plebes” clueless). Once the zios and the old fashioned fascists got together in a big way, the much more sophisticated skills the zionists have been using to subordinate the left to zionist interests were put in the service of the whole fascist establishment, not just the zio connected portions. This had the advantage of neutralising both the left and right who had been oppositional to both zionism and fascism. The “chomskyites” on the left and the neo-con/Christian zionists on the right – forget the centre, they’ve always gone with whoever “buttered their buns”. The much greater skill of zionist co-opters greatly enhanced the ability of these corporate fascists to neutralise any serious opposition.

This is why there has been no threatening opposition to israel’s wars on any scale now compared with that mobilised against what were previously more amero-interest centred wars in S.E. Asia in the 40-70’s. In the span of time between then and now, the zionists took over the opposition and neutralised it. The old time fascists, even in the usa, were never able to castrate the left so thoroughly as the zionists have done. They never developed the expertise at co-optation the zionists have. They never had to, not being a minority in a sea of potentially hostile “others” type environment that many of the zionists cut their teeth in, but rather being privileged fops and spoiled brats, and completely ignorant of those outside their own pampered, privileged class. That ignorance has now cost these previously dominate oligarchs dearly, as the zionists have completely outmaneuvered them at their own power games and have taken over. Those old timer corporate fascists are now in the unenviable of position of being subordinates to the very people they discriminated against and attempted to marginalise, and zionists, being the innate, craven cowards they are, love nothing better than lording this new found power over their former rivals – as can be seen by comments israelis make about their “marks” outside israel, especially by israeli leaders about officials in other countries subordinate to zionism, inc.

    Deadbeat writes:
“This is clearly a strawman. I have no idea whether or not anyone here subscribes to whether Zionism has influenced U.S. Foreign Policy for the “past 100 years” but it is obvious that Zionism has greatly influenced U.S. policy since 1948 which would make that 62 years. You can even go back to 1932 with the election of FDR making that a total of 78 years.”

So basically US cold war policy was a result of Zionism? If so please give specific examples.

    hayate,

In the two articles you posted there was nothing about a Zionist plot behind the coup attempts.

Another jewel of zionazi way of “thinking”: from “Zionism has greatly influenced U.S. policy since 1948” reach the conclusion “US cold war policy was a result of Zionism”…

” My theory is that you’re actually a hasbarat yourself, sent here as an agent provocateur to make pro-Palestinian activists appear to be obnoxious lunatics and derail intelligent conversation by immediately attacking anyone who asks legitimate questions about your ideas. If the Zionists are even half as crafty and duplicitous as you make them out to be I wouldn’t put it past them”.

I’ve suggested this before as an exercise in logic more so than an actual hypothesis and it sent at least Deadbeat into a fit of anger. If these guys are not hasbarat, they certainly do please the trolls who are curiously absent for the most part since they showed up with this amount of constant posting (in fairness to DB he used to post alongside the mebosas). When corrected on anything, they resort to the same shit often used by any supporter of Zionism.

Funny though is that it’s not just paid Zionist trolls who would do that—OR even unpaid supporters of Israel. This is a trait shared by all zealots and the righteousness of their cause always justifies their behavior. While committing fallacies they tend to try to cite them in an ironic abuse of them.

Can’t the criminality of Zion be challenged without the need to be a religion while doing it?

And though it may be missed on them (less likely so if they are clever hasbarat agents), just because I’m saying these methods show betrayal to any would be motive, does not mean that there is no truth in what’s being said. This is why to me and perhaps others that these methods could appear to be intended to inspire ad hominem–or a gut reaction to throw out the truth of what may be said due to the poor presentation and zealotry of the people supposedly representing any truth.

Really, what is the goal of yelling down people all day long? Was someone in danger of falling victim without a sarcastic rebuttal to the tricky zionist chomskyite attempting brain control? The sarcastic yelling was going to win them over? Ah fuckit, after writing all this and based on my past attempts, I’m answering my own questions and thinking this site is infested with hasbarats making any truth look as foolish as possible

“Border line deranged”? I am worse than that– i am a very happy basket case!
I don’t even use my own brain–it is very small and my grades in school prove it. Actually i only had two yrs of ‘schooling’ and finished last in each of the two classes.
Even tho i have said this several times, people still read what we say. I said “we” because what i put dwn on paper is what others have said.
Own my own i wldn’t know how to make a toothpick let alone a spoon.

So these ‘crazy’ thinkers told me that we are no longer civilized– but were once. And reading today’s posts on DV prove.
Well, there are still a few people who assert that the earth is flat ad many, too many, that we are civilized.
Ok! i take that back and go along with the crowd and say we are highly civilized; especially because having WMD, drones, ipods, computers, TV, viagra, pills that cure all our illnesses, etc. tnx

The ziobots do go into tantrums a lot. It’s standard ziobot defense tactic when people point out their deceit. They make a scene and point the finger at someone else. And I see another ziobot has joined the s.w.a.r.m. on this thread. You’ll notice how they’ve hardly touched the other threads. It’s almost like they are bot programmes set to respond only to a narrow stimulus and criticism of zionist crimes is the one that is prioritized. Notice that not one of these ziobots has discussed the coup in Ecuador, other than defend the view that israel/zionists are not involved.
