Confrontational Anniversary

Two days away
from it having been
two years
since my Father passed…
right in front of my eyes.

It changes a man
at his core
to witness greatness fade.

Confronted daily
with the demons
of my own detachment…
like a snake
set upon my shoulder
slowly slithering
around my neck
while whispering
the sweet song
of apathy into my weathered ear.

Shoo! fly,
don’t bother me…
don’t drain away my empathy…
don’t poison my lungs ability to breathe…
don’t blind me from the truth I seek…
don’t cast aside my humanity…
just let me feel the sweet release
of letting go what I don’t need
while holding close
eternally
to that final smile
upon his lips
that promised
it’s all OK.
