Bones and Roses
by Mihaela Melnic / September 15th, 2024
Well-preserved hooded skulls of ancient priests
have been waiting for me for centuries in their catacombs
to be told about the gruesome reality of today’s world.
They would hand out a femur to each visitor, if they could,
to smash what must be destroyed
careless that the path to serenity
is much more different and intricate than violence.
I would go headlong to the core
of the nearby bush of roses
like a monk who knows the value
of faith and redemption
and let the thorns write on my skin
the history of peace
rather than wield that femur.
