october rain

(for kristine, my furthest back friend)

leaves have been falling since august
september continued july’s promise of summer
october rain fell heavily upon all below
the hope
the promise
that comes with the spring
and continues through the summer
has begun to fade

woodlands are less dense
the flora bends toward the earth
fauna inches closer to the edge
the cover
the safety
that comes with the spring
and continues through the summer
has begun to decay

the hours of illumination are fewer now
the revolving, rotating earth continues its journey
soon a time our ancestors feared will be near
the light
the warmth
that comes with the spring
continues within our dreams
offering a promise of hope
