Small-Eyed Witness

He steps lightly when he leaves his bedroom
and takes cover in a hidden alcove of the kitchen.
At five, the kid knows his old man is dangerous
on days like this, when work is scarce
and the top of the Vodka bottle
is face up on the kitchen table
before sunrise.
