Invasive Species

Was this what the world
Was meant to be,
This screeching, brawling,
Murderous conglomeration
Of vicious, self-aggrandizing
Psychopathic, homicidal
Brutes and barbarians
Who concoct abstruse
And utterly nonsensical excuses
For their unspeakable cruelties?

What sort of creatures are these
Who gleefully pump bullets
Into the brains of infants and toddlers?
Who happily dismember and decapitate,
Crush and incinerate
Children attempting to escape
Their bombs?
What kind of ghouls take delight
In mercilessly raping prisoners,
In eviscerating pregnant women?

Was all of this encoded
In the DNA of Homo sapiens?
Is the mangling of the soul
And the murdering of each other
Our genetic destiny?
Or is there living among us
An invasive species,
Like cane toads
And mountain pine beetles
And feral pigs,
That wreak havoc in the natural world?
What can we do about these moral mutants
Who have so disfigured and contorted our world
And brought the human project
To the brink
Of utter annihilation?
