Of Horseshoes, Heroes, and Hand Grenades

For the past week
there has been a feeling
that every moment is being lived
on borrowed measure

or that of grace

The difference of one inch
between ear and brain
just altered the course of human history

If you think about the impacting
big waves of world war
Franz Ferdinand’s assassination stirred up

I weep to imagine
where we’d be right now
in an environment already
churning through chaos
had that bullet
taken Trump’s life
instead of
a bloody pint

but he was spared
in the slight turning
of his head
and our country
for the moment
granted reprieve

A silent space
betwixt one breath
on either side
of alternate timelines

Iconography in lucid motion
surrealistic folklore legend

The once and future President
staggered for all of 60 seconds

Indomitable will
towers tall
fist raised
singing
fight, fight, fight

in all the most
peaceful ways
of linguistic riposte

Old glory
waving in the wind

They say reality is stranger than fiction
and I damn well learned to believe ‘em
