With 25 thousand others: San Francisco, 1/14/24

With 25 thousand others
I stand under a bright blue
January sky
Opposing genocide

With 25 thousand beautifully angry compatriots
I am demanding an end
To the wholesale slaughter of children
An end to the bombing of hospitals and homes
An end to expulsion
And ethnic cleansing

Under the bright blue sky
People are carrying signs
Waving flags
Flying kites
Hoisting enormous puppets
To represent victory over darkness
To represent the strength and courage and compassion
Shining within each of us

Cars drive by and honk their support
Casual strollers walk by
Stop to learn more
And stay to take a stand against
Those who claim superiority
Who claim the ones they maim and murder
Are less than human

With 25 thousand others
I watch the sun disappear behind a cloud
Then watch more clouds
Slowly conceal the bright blue January sky
But here below brightness remains
The brightness of truth
The brightness of resistance
The brightness of children and parents
The brightness of old people and young
The brightness of standing together
In solidarity and community
The brightness of the possible world
Waiting just over there
