Which war?

I admit to being somewhat confused.
It is unclear to me
If this is the current war
We are witnessing
Or the last one
Or a war yet to come.
I am uncertain if
The breathless reporting
Of heroic victories
Against a supremely malevolent enemy
Is new news,
Reprise,
Or prediction.
Is this opponent
We are so energetically hating
An old foe
We have always enjoyed despising
Or a fresh one
Basking in our virulent animosity
For the first time?
Although we have done our best
To expunge all the wickedness
From the world
Evil is persistent and elusive,
Popping up all over the map,
And enemies everywhere
Are certain to have their turn
In the spotlight of our wrath
And the gimlet gaze
Of the lords of information
Who nourish our fury.
It behooves us to be prepared
For the next great conflict,
To be ready to whip out
Our patriotic fervor,
Our righteous indignation,
And our fervent antipathy
Like six-shooters from their holsters,
And fire away
Until another great victory is ours.
