dead among the dead
by Robin Wyatt Dunn / September 7th, 2025
dead among the dead
we sleep in place watching the stars move over our faces
alien ships at war
our secret necropolis does not know it’s perished
only we elect
watch the bodies decay
as they go to work and slave for their masters
we among them
drones inside the hive
drifting slow into the center
where the queen rages
when you take me out
under the sky
where I make the directions of the world
and I judge you
when the city marvels at its own defeat in quiet
lifting up its feet to stretch the tendons
watching the construction dust rise over the accident by my house
and the supermarket clerk jerks her bar code in front of my face
demanding money
and the long low dip of the Hawaiian BBQ drive thru lane catches fire
our enemies’ movements are recorded in internet posts
video and photographs
wounds and pleas for help
and we soldiers stay at home
waiting
dead among the dead
count down down the days to life
