Big Hero

Little mutts that yap-yap-yap,
Those yappy dogs disgust me.
My energy they simply sap,
Then yap-yap-yap some more.

Give me a big dog any day,
A friendly canine I can hug,
A bowser who will romp and play,
Might even save a life, they say.

But then I read this news report
That made me think anew
About a longhaired little sport
Who saved a human life.

Sitting in a field of snow,
She stared intently at a spot
Where a man was trapped below.
A beautiful chihuahua,

She did not use her strength or speed
Nor snapping jaws to snarl or snag.
She sat for hours, no drink, no feed,
Then guided rescuers with her gaze.

I’d like to give that dog a hug,
And if she would, just shake her paw.
That fluffy dog with a cute mug,
Taught me a lot today.
