Congress Urged to Act Now as Israel Moves to “Occupy and Flatten” Gaza and Starvation Worsens

Headline on Common Dreams, 5/16/25

Like an enormous and ignorant beast,
Congress listens to tales
Of genocide
With its mouth hanging open,
Slobber dripping down its chin,
A baffled look on its flaccid face,
Poised dumbly atop a heap of rancid legislation,
Waiting to be fed.

In Gaza, with a vast arsenal
Congress has provided,
The Israeli Defense Forces
Continue to lay waste to the wasted land,
Attempting to erase all traces
Of their Original Sin.
Good people everywhere
Condemn the Israeli crime of crimes
And decry the enabling Congress,
Which replies to all criticism with a thundering
“Huh?”

In addition to its cerebral deficit,
Congress suffers from a shrunken and deflated heart,
For it is unable to empathize
With the victims of its weaponry piñata,
Unable to muster up one iota of compassion
For the families decimated,
The children amputated,
The parents decapitated,
The doctors and journalists and ambulance drivers
And teachers and taxi drivers and shop keepers
Erased.

Empathy requires imagination,
Imagination requires intelligence,
Intelligence requires courage,
Congress requires donations
For services rendered.
