Ode to Comrades Before Us!

Let’s raise a toast
To those who came before us, and
Lost lives fighting Tierney
To brave souls in the underground
Undermining nazis then and now!
Facing firing squads and other
Torture most horrid
Young men and women
Living and loving in the moment
With such passion
Willing to give their lives, in order
To save others and protect democracy!
Refusing blind folds and smoking their
Last cigarette, defiantly, looking
Into faces of evil captors
Spitting in their eyes and shouting:
“Viva the revolution!”
We must honor their sacrifices
To protect a society, that ensures
Everyone has a right to be who ever
They choose to be or are!
Gay, straight, women, child,
Elderly or mentally challenged.
We must never look the other way
For they did not!
I honor them and smile when I see their
Youthful faces, for they have fallen, but
It is our task to keep the resistance alive
Prepared to do the same, if need be
I fear that time has arrived, democracy
Is under siege by the elite
Rise bohemians rise
Drink red wine, smoke that cigarette
And make passionate love, for destiny
Is calling out our names and
Never forget those who came before us
The horses are saddled, we ride at dawn!
