Impending Particulars

The city is too loud tonight.
Something is greatly amiss.
There is a baleful broken buzz
from the homeless underpasses
that carries past the restaurant crowds
and across the brownstones
where doormen snap alert.

There are too many sirens
scatter screaming
in unfamiliar locations.
The hair on my arm bristles
as I hear native neighbors
check the bolts on their doors.
