Apologies Not Needed

We apologize for the invasion.
The military were rusty.
The pols were down in the polls.
And, besides, your government
is as crooked as a snake with a broken back.
We should know.
We helped installed them.

And we have, to quote bob Dylan,
“God on our side.”
Yes, we know you have your God also.
But is He in direct communication
with your president?
I think not.

Maybe after a lot
of bombing and shooting,
rioting soldiers
and piled-up corpses,
democracy will be
the last ideology standing.

In which case,
anyone left alive
will thank us.
So our apologies are not
really needed.
We can put them back in storage
for the next time.
