Time!

Time…
I have plucked you from
My womb
And
Have put you in a
Jar full of ‘formalin’
So that you stay…

You stay…
You stay…

Dead though
But
Not decaying!

Time…
I have loved you.

Time…
I have made love with you.

Time…
I have betrayed you…

Or
Did I?

Time!

Our relationship had always been
Between that of two –
Betrothed
And
Betrayed

Time…

Can you tell me
Who had
Betrayed
And
Whom?

• Author’s note: The immediate trigger of this poem has been a fictional character Marina, played by Italian actor Monica Bellucci way back in the early 90’s, but looking beneath the veneer of time that we are going through in this part of the world where ‘periods’ (such as the Mughal period) are getting expunged (almost) from history text books, the desire to preserve time, becomes an impulse and this poem gives words to that impulse.
