I Hear America Bullshitting

One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted.

— Harry G. Frankfurt, On Bullshit, Princeton University Press, 2005.

They tell us we’re a nation of laws,
those who serve the law are meant
to see things as they are and speak
of them in the language of the law.
Yet what we hear from those who
serve the State, the Party, and on
paper the people they represent,
is bullshit: yesterday, today and
I’d bet, tomorrow too.
They say they must speak in
language simple for the little
people to understand, I say it’s
bullshit for those good folks to
deceive. It has worked for our
leaders from the Old Frontier
to the New, for one Party and
the other, for Robber Barons
and Wall Street Magicians.
The people have heard so
much bullshit and so little truth
they no longer can tell one
from the other and vote for
the bigger of two liars almost
every time,and only the label
on the bottle of snake oil bought
changes.
