Raising Cain
by Scott Thomas Outlar / June 9th, 2019
Want to think of something belligerent to say
but the water is still
Can I shove my peace down your throat
so you can speak for me
when I fall silent?
Want to voice seven prima facie objections
but friction is flatline
Can I spit up your sold-out justice
so the wobbling scales
have a safe place to crash?
Want to bite the tongue that lies so sweetly
but teeth are fasting
Can I bury the sugar from cane
so the dirt licks dry
all the blood on your hands?
Want to dream of new wars to devise
but the river is calm
Can I laugh at the karma recycling
so the next spin burns
where light fears to tread?
