When Color Fades
by Scott Thomas Outlar / January 6th, 2019
What message from the tree
whose branches are barren
as it stands stoically
through a season so cold?
It speaks of resiliency
with every ring
added to its core,
continuing to tower
above the plot
where leaves return to soil.
It knows of shedding skin,
of the importance to not cling
or hold too tightly
to that which must inevitably pass.
It sings of hearts
that stay warm in winter
even when the features
admired most
are no longer seen.
It understands the nature
of impermanence,
and makes a promise
that love is not skin deep
by showing its strength
with roots that spring eternal.
