Israel’s Gaza Blockade

Letting the Chips Fall Where They May

In a gesture that has received more than a little attention in the Western media, Israeli officials announced with some fanfare that they were easing the embargo of goods they allow into Palestine. Israel’s supporters have been using the opportunity to declare that this demonstrates Israel is reasonable, and that US support of Israel is fully justified, even given the exceptionally tepid US response to the Israeli assault on the Gaza flotilla and America’s sustained opposition to any international efforts to hold Israel accountable for its actions.

This gesture becomes markedly less impressive once one examines the list of items once embargoed but now (at least for a while) allowed by Israel into Gaza. As a news website in India reported, “Palestinian liaison official Raed Fattouh, who coordinates the flow of goods into Gaza with Israel, said that soda, juice, jam, spices, shaving cream, potato chips, cookies and candy were now permitted.” Not much, to put it mildly, but to a suffering people in the ruins of their city, I imagine almost anything will be better than nothing. Besides, at least some of the aid supplies the Israelis have removed from the pirated Gaza flotilla vessels may end up in Gaza at some point, and that, too, will be something

But the announced easing of the embargo, slight or even less than that, is significant in a way I am certain Israel did not intend, and which may even make a few of its supporters just a little anxious. This is because it provides an interesting insight into the real Israeli motivation behind the embargo, and thus of the blockade itself, and not the one it professes internationally and its cabal elsewhere echoes so vociferously.

Consider, first of all, Israel’s defense of its blockade of Gaza as something that is essential for its security, with the accompanying embargo on products that it allows to enter Gaza officially being intended to deprive Hamas of anything that might strengthen its position there, and allow it to strike Israel anywhere with anything. This is the theme reiterated by Israeli officials when they halt land convoys and intercept sea-going ones, and applauded by its cheerleaders in the US Congress and the mainstream media in the US and elsewhere.

Then look at the once-embargoed items now allowed at least temporarily into Gaza. Potato chips?? Potato chips were once considered by the Israeli government as a staple of Hamas support, or a weapon that could threaten Israel, or both?? Now I confess that I personally have nothing against potato chips. In fact, I love them. But I cannot see how they constitute a threat to anything except possibly the health of the person consuming them. They make terrible bunkers, hitting someone with a bag of potato chips — even a large one — cannot remotely be considered life-threatening, and putting them into a catapult and throwing them at a Merkava tank or a nearby Israeli town isn’t going to be a threat to anyone.

So embargoing potato chips, like so many other items on Israel’s list in support of its illegal blockade of Gaza, has absolutely nothing to do with Israeli security interests — can we agree on this point? But it symbolizes a key aspect of the core Israeli strategy underlying the blockade, which is a blend of heavy-handed brutality and small-minded malevolence, designed first to ruin what little the Palestinians there have, and then to make sustained misery their present fare and future diet until they succumb and either go away, accept their Israeli overlords, or die.

This strategy of the collective punishment of a people — which is a breach of international law and a war crime, ladies and gentlemen of any legislatures and media outlets who have not checked their ethics into their respective Israeli embassies and consulates — is essentially designed to hurt Palestinians and not to protect Israelis. The Israelis understand this, as do their supporters overseas. The Palestinians in Gaza, and many in the West Bank, certainly understand that — even Abbas may on those rare moments when thought works its way through the murkiness surrounding it. And so do those who try, often bravely but usually unsuccessfully, to bring some humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.

This knowledge alone isn’t much help. But it is always a good thing to really understand your enemy, and an enemy that has an affinity for dominance and inflicting deaths of a thousand cuts in the name of intangibles such as the Exodus theme, is very different from one that confronts you directly over tangible interests that permit compromise.

Too many of us — myself once included — for too long have viewed Israelis as just a particularly nasty variant of a type often seen in the world, something like semi-Semitic Prussians or an apartheid-era South Africa of the Middle East. They are not. They are much worse, and much more dangerous to all of us, than either of those — the Palestinians and Israel’s neighbors are just in the front line now. Their chips — and not the edible ones — are on Israel’s playing table now. Do any of the rest of us really want to sit back and wait for our round in the game to begin at Israel’s pleasure?

    ‘BLOCKADE IS ECONOMIC WARFARE NOT A SECURITY MEASURE’ – McClatchy.

    Now we are getting near the truth.

    “As Israel ordered a slight easing of its blockade of the Gaza Strip Wednesday, McClatchy obtained an Israeli government document that describes the blockade not as a security measure but as “economic warfare” against the Islamist group Hamas, which rules the Palestinian territory.”

    Perhaps, the nature has started to shrink some brains. ‘Jewish’ brains [ tho of our size], nature had noticed, are nevertheless to big for her health-security; so, she’s been shrinking them for at least a century. That solves the mystery of chips, chocolate, pencils, etc!

    But how do i explain the fact that ‘jews’, who have brains like we do, nevertheless, are so succcessful?
    So, it is then by devine intervention? But, wait a minute, why is s/he giving them a tiny-wretchedly poor piece of land instead of a continent or even a planet then?

    Hold on! Wait! Trolls will ‘explain’ this , too! tnx

    Dr. Alan Sabrosky must not minimise the extraordinary act of Israeli generosity by now allowing potato crisps and biscuits to the deprived people of Gaza!! They are even allowing in Hummus; isn’t that the height of humanitarian concern?!!! I am sure president Obama and vice-president Biden will hail that as the height of Israeli democracy!!!

    Damn good article, especially the last points:

    Ha bloody ha!

    Egypt-US concede failure of steel barrier along Gaza borders

    http://alethonews.wordpress.com/2010/06/11/egypt-us-concede-failure-of-steel-barrier-along-gaza-borders/

    But not so amusing for those who dig the tunnels and bring the goods in when the border at Rafah closes, as it inevitably will, after the furore about this latest Israeli killing spree dies down.

    The Arab League calls for an end to the blockade on Gaza.

    The blockade on the Gaza Strip “must be broken”, the head of the Arab League Amr Moussa has said.

    The Arab world’s most senior diplomat spoke at the beginning of his first trip to the Palestinian territory.

    Israel and Egypt have held a tightened blockade on Gaza since the Islamist movement Hamas took over there in 2007.

    Nine people were killed when Israeli troops boarded a flotilla of ships carrying aid as they attempted to break the blockade on 31 May.

    “This blockade which we are all here to confront must be broken and the position of the Arab League is clear,” Mr Moussa said as he was met by Palestinian leaders at the Rafah crossing with Egypt.

    Following the flotilla raid, Egypt opened its border with Gaza allowing people with valid passes to cross.

    Egypt has said the crossing will remain open “indefinitely”.

    Is this a first from the Arab League?

    You have to be up early to see what ZBC get up to!

    Whoever wrote that earlier daring headline at 9.12 am ‘ The Arab League calls for an end to the blockade on Gaza’ has now probably been sacked or carpeted.

    It now reads at 10.53 am on the same link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/10303301.stm

    Arab League chief Amr Moussa in first visit to Gaza (New headline)

    Page last updated at 09:53 GMT, Sunday, 13 June 2010 10:53 UK

    It is the first visit from a senior Arab official since 2007

    The Head of the Arab League is visiting the Gaza Strip, the first senior Arab official to do so since the Islamist militant group Hamas took over in 2007.

    Amr Moussa’s visit is partly intended to add to pressure on Israel to end its Gaza blockade, correspondents say.

    Nine people were killed when Israeli troops boarded an aid flotilla trying to break the blockade on 31 May.

    Israel and Egypt have held a tightened blockade on Gaza since Hamas seized control of the Palestinian territory.

    Mr Moussa’s trip will also be aimed at trying to heal a rift between Hamas and Fatah, who control the West Bank.

    ‘Unsustainable’
    Mr Moussa is scheduled to meet with the leaders of Hamas, as well as other factions in the territory.

    Analysis
    Continue reading the main story Tim Franks,
    BBC News, Jerusalem
    Amr Moussa’s visit carries significance on two levels.

    It is intended to add to the growing international pressure for Israel to lift its blockade of Gaza – a blockade which Israel argues is necessary to preserve security, but whose rationale and effects on the people of Gaza is, elsewhere, widely opposed.

    Mr Moussa’s appearance in Gaza also extends a hand to Hamas – an Islamist movement the Arab League has up to now preferred to keep at arm’s length.

    There will be further talk now of trying to broker a reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah – the two main, bitterly divided Palestinian factions

    He is also expected to meet local businessmen and non-governmental organisations during the 10-hour trip.

    Mr Moussa’s trip is also aimed at finding a way of bringing two Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah together, says the BBC’s Tim Franks in Jerusalem.

    Hamas gunmen drove Fatah out of Gaza in 2007, and relations between the two groups remain strained.

    The trip was announced soon after the flotilla of ships, led by the Turkish Mavi Marmara, were prevented from entering the waters off Gaza.

    They were carrying 10,000 tonnes of aid, including building materials which are currently restricted under the terms of the blockade.

    The Israeli government says the blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas and other militant groups launching rocket attacks on Israel.

    The restrictions mean life for the 1.5 million population of Gaza has become crippling, correspondents say.

    Many are still living in makeshift camps after their homes were destroyed in an Israeli incursion in December 2008 and January 2009.

    Last week US President Barack Obama said the blockade was “unsustainable” and pledged hundreds of millions of dollars in aid.

    At the beginning of June Mr Moussa said the Arab League, a 22-member forum representing Arab nations, would go to the UN Security Council to demand the blockade be lifted.

    ~~~~~
    PS Hamas did not ‘ take over’. They were democratically elected. You probably get the anti-Hamas denigration throughout. It is always
    Hamas= Bad
    Fatah=Good
    Israel=V.Good
    Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu who was in Washingtion last Tuesday, called the Israeli cammandos’ murder spree on Turkish vessel at international waters, psychological equivalent of “9/11 for Turkey” adding: “I am not very happy with the statemenst from United States yesterday”. He was referring to Obama administration being acting as a perfect Israeli poodle by steadfastly avoiding to blame the Zionist entity for its latest slap on the face of the international community amid nearly universal condemnation.
    A native Palestinian member of Israeli Knesset (parliament), Haneen Zoubi (Balad), has received death threats from the Zionazi terrorist groups for joining the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and may lose her seat (watch video below).
    The ‘Israel-Firsters’ in Obama administration are trying their best to separate Israel’s latest terrorism in the Mediterranian from its plan to impose another round of crippling sanctions against the Islamic Republic for the later’s nuclear program. The Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, Bill Burns (a Zionist Jew) told an audience at the America’s most influential Jewish think tank, Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington: “We intend to continue to move ahead a resolution in New York focused squarely on the reality that Iran has thus far been unwilling to engage with the international community on the concern that the IAEA underscored again yesterday”.
    Hillary Clinton along with the ‘Israel-First’ dominated Obama administration realizes that Israeli raids on Freedom Flotilla has made it almost impossible for it to get the new sanctions bill against Iran passed in the UNSC. The bill would require ‘no veto’ from the five permanent UNSC members and four non-permanent members of the 15-member international body. Turkey, Brazil and Lebanon are certainly not going to jump into USrael bed – and there are rumours that Mexico and some other members will abstain. Both Russia and China has lauded the Turkey-Iran-Brazil nuclear material swap deal and would not be joining the US, France and Britain to support new sanctions against Iran. A group of US nuclear experts and diplomats, too, has praised the deal brokered by Brazil and Turkey, calling it a potential “first step” toward ratcheting down the tension between the West and the Islamic Republic.
    To help Hillary & Co. DEBKAfile, a website married to Israeli Mossad fired a new ‘smoking gun’ on June 8, saying that Osama Bin Laden along with Ayman Al-Zawahiri and five other high-ranking Al-Qaeda leaders have been hiding in Sabzevar (Iran) under Tehran’s protection and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his intelligence chiefs (most of whom are Crypto-Jews and closer to Mossad than Turkish government) are well aware of that. This shows how low the Zionist facists can stoop. Most people know that Israel has been trying for decades to push Americans in war with Iran – but now they are planning against their oldest ally in the region to become a military target for Washington. One wonder, when would Israel’s major ally (the US) would reach a point to be slaughtered by the Zionists?
    In order to tighten screws on the outlaw state, several groups have announced to wage more flotilla attacks on Israel. British MP, George Galloway, while addressing a 20,000-strong anti-Israel protest rally infront of Israeli embassy in London on June 5, announced that he plans to send two simultaneous convoys – one by land and other by Sea. The convoy by land will have 500 vehicles and the convoy by Sea will consist of 60 vessels – filled with humanitarian aid and volunteers to break the siege of Gaza. The land convoy will start from London and travel across Europe to Turkey, Syria and ultimately through the Rafah crossing (Egypt) into Gaza. The Sea convoy will travel around the Mediterranean, gathering vessels, cargo, volunteers from each country – destination besieged 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza Strip.
    A German-Jewish organization Jewish Voice for Peace in Middle East has announced to take a “Jewish Flotilla” to Gaza Strip in July. According to its organizer, Kate Leitrer, 12 to 16 Jews aid workers and musicians will travel in one small craft carrying school equipment, candy and mainly musical instruments. “By stopping the flotilla, Israel acted criminally. Israel must not act like pirates. Jews have been to Gaza in the past, and were treated in a friendly manner. We have also talked with them (Hamas) recently, and they are very keen for us to come. We are frightened by what happened on the Marmara (Turkish vessel), but if you are committed to do good things, you have to act. People were also killed in the fight against (Judo-Nazi) fascism”.
    Islamic Republic’s Red Crescent has announced to send two aid ships to Gaza later this week. The ships will carry food, medicine, doctors and volunteers. A previous such attempt was stopped by Israeli navy, but the latest attempts comes amid reports that Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards have expressed their readiness to escort the aid flotillas to Gaza. Iran’s foreign ministry has also given approval to it on Sunday.
    The UN Security Council has called for a “prompt, impartial, credible and transparent” investigation into Israel’s pre-planned attack on aid flotillas. Washington has sided with Tel Aviv pretending that Zionist entity can be trusted with conducting a “prompt, impartial, crediable and transparent investigation conforming to international satndard”! In response to Washington ZOG, an Istanbul court has opened a criminal investigation in the nine Turkish aid workers murdered at close-range by the Jewish soldiers during attack on Gaza Freedom Flotilla. Prosecutor Mehmet Tastan has charged Benjamin Netanyahu (PM), Gen. Ehud Barak (DM) and Gen. Gabi Ashkenasi (CJS) with piracy, assualt, murder, kidnapping and arbitrary imprisonment. A similar criminal investigation in a British court may follow.
