In this talk, Ali explains the reasons that poetry is so central to his latest book, Bush in Babylon. He reads a number of poems in their entirety, and explains the political context and importance of them. The question and answer section is every bit as interesting, in particular his discussion of the history of the Inquisition, the expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula or forced conversion of Muslims and Jews in the 15th century, and the creation of the modern European identity.

Recorded at Beyond Baroque in Venice, CA, November 14, 2003. Recorded by Grace Lee.
