Dignity, Mavi Marmara, and Now Irene

A question for the British Foreign Secretary

Mr Hague, is it not your responsibility to keep seaways open?

“The unbroken thread of Conservative Party support for Israel that has run for nearly a century from the Balfour Declaration to the present day will continue. Although it will no doubt often be tested in the years ahead, it will remain constant, unbroken, and undiminished by the passage of time.”

No prize for guessing which leading politician uttered these words.

It was your good self, Mr Foreign Secretary, back in 2008.

Now for a reality check. I want to share with you, Mr Foreign Secretary, this powerful and moving interview with Lilian Rosengarten by Philip Weiss.

75 year-old Lilian, an American, was on board Irene, the Jewish boat to Gaza, when the vessel was assaulted by “dehumanized” Israelis. Lilian and the other passengers were abducted. She was later deported and told never to come back.

It seems to Lilian that the Israelis, in their own best interests, would have been wiser to send a small boat to intercept the catamaran Irene, “no guns, but an ambassador coming on to the deck to say, ‘Sorry folks, we can’t let you through’.”

Instead they chose the terror option against these elderly, unarmed peace voyagers. “We saw 9 or 11 warships, some with guns, and then they were at the front and the back and the side of our little boat — and why? It was inexplicable to me. Inexplicable. That our little catamaran with nine Jews, survivors in their 70s and 80s and all of them human rights activists, that they should send nine boats with guns pointed…”

Lilian and her friends were surrounded by “soldiers dressed to the gills with the boots and the Tasers and the helmets and the gloves with the fingers showing… What war was this? Who were they fighting?… And since I got back I read Gideon Levy saying that each year of occupation has made the Israelis harder. Gradually they have become dehumanized.”

Lilian describes how Israel’s much-vaunted military behaved. “They had kicked Glyn [that’s Glyn Secker, the captain] to the ground to get him off the wheel… Itamar’s being tied up on the other boat, and they’re tasering Yonatan. He was screaming. It was just fascistic. It could have been Haiti under Duvalier, it could have been Chile under Pinochet, it could have been Franco’s Spain.

I saw first hand the dehumanization and the brutality…and rigid tunnel vision. I could see the truth of the most moral army in the world. No army is moral. And this army, it is brutal, not only to others in Palestine, but to Jews who dissent.

“Dissent has to be crushed to keep the myth of Israel going…”

So, Mr Foreign Secretary, here was a harmless little sailboat carrying symbolic relief supplies such as a high-tech device for purifying water, children’s books from a German school, backpacks, and musical instruments, surrounded by 9 or 11 warships. “What is this paranoia?” asks Lilian. “What is this fear?”

Jews who dissent against fellow Jews who have become a military state that seizes Palestinian land and imposes a siege on the entire Palestinian population… “that dissent has to be crushed to keep the myth of Israel going. Look at Yonatan. When a man of conscience decides he can’t bomb Palestinians, and says, no, I can’t do it, he is seen as a traitor instead of a patriot. And now it is to the point that a Jew who doesn’t go along with the right position is deported.”

Asked what it means to flee Nazi Germany as a young Jew and now be kicked out of Israel as an older one, Lilian weeps. “I think about my mentor Hans. He is 91. I can’t ever go to visit him. I can’t go there if he dies. And my Palestinian friends, I can’t see them again either… My response is sheer nausea – at the truth of what Israel has become.”

Lilian’s revelations are reinforced by a letter in The Guardian from Glyn Secker, who skippered the little Irene.

“The Israeli Defence Force says that there was no resistance and no violence in the boarding of The Jewish Boat,” writes Secker. “In fact, when boarded, we cut the engines and I held the wheel with all my strength. With one commando standing by with an electric Taser, two others removed me (I am 66) and threw me hard to the floor.”

Commandos singled out Yonatan and Itamar Shapira, our two refuseniks. Itamar was violently dragged backwards across the safety wires to their boat and restrained dangerously by a commando who pushed his fingers deep into Itamar’s jugular artery. Yonatan was hugging Rami Elhanan, our Bereaved Families passenger. The commander fired his Taser twice into Yonatan’s shoulder, then with deliberation moved Yonatan’s lifejacket aside, placed his Taser directly over Yonatan’s heart and fired. Yonatan’s whole body went into spasm, he let out a fearful scream, crashed across the cockpit and was dragged backwards over the safety wires to the commandos’ boat.

So there you have it, Mr Foreign Secretary. The military wing of the lawless entity you so admire behaves towards its own brethren in much the same brutal manner as it has done for the last 62 years towards their Arab neighbours, and more recently towards innocent internationals peacefully going about their humanitarian business on the high seas.

It must be a disappointment, Mr Foreign Secretary, that your enthusiasm for Israel and its Zionist project is no longer shared by a British public that’s now better informed and not so easily duped.

We are repeatedly told by ministers that Israel is an important ally, but nobody buys that any more. We are judged globally by the friends we keep, and the “unbroken thread of support for Israel” misguidedly perpetuated by our political leaders only brings us grief and a stained reputation, and this is cause for real anger.

The Irene was a British flagged vessel, but what action has the Foreign Office taken in response to her violation by Israel’s armed thugs? Come to think of it, the Foreign Office was also strangely subdued about the wanton barbarity towards the 28 British nationals aboard the Mavi Marmara and other vessels in the flotilla when it was attacked by the same hooligans with guns blazing. Has proper compensation been paid and property returned?

Dignity, Mavi Marmara and now Irene … menaced, mauled and hijacked by marauding Israelis. The international waters of the Eastern Mediterranean are clearly unsafe. Is it not up to the British government and its UN partners to keep the seaways open and guarantee free movement as required by numerous treaties, charters and the law?

Israel always wins! And, of course, Britain is in Israel’s pocket! I suspect that behind all of this is “Plan B”, i.e. when the US collapses, “other countries”, specifically, Britain, will step into America’s shoes as Israel’s bully and Israel will go on winning into the next millennium. We’ve had Conservative friends of Israel, Labour friends of Israel, Liberal friends of Israel and even the Methodists. But I think Mr Littlewood’s real point is not that Britain should “keep the seaways open” or other similar 19th century nonsense, but that Britain hasn’t yet dropped a nuclear bomb on Israel, from whence he makes the simplistic jump to the conclusion that Britain is therefore in Israel’s pocket. In fact, though, he shoots himself in the foot. He illustrates the approach of, not just Britain, but of all European countries, namely the Churchillian principle that “jaw-jaw is better than war-war”. Speak loudly but carry no stick, so to speak! That suits the Palestinians perfectly. They don’t need allies. They have the whole Muslim world behind them and both Israel and its American bully are increasingly discredited. All they need from Europe is its neutrality, and that’s what they’re getting. For Israel, on the other hand, the European jaw-jaw is a disaster. It has only one ally and it is collapsing, bankrupted, precisely, by its support for Israel. That European leaders might not be exactly enthusiastic about being the next to go bankrupt propping up Israel is hardly surprising. Thus, the day the US collapses, and Israel’s back is to the wall, European leaders will do exactly as they are doing now: all talk and no action! Chalk up yet another victory for the Palestinians.

OK! I am not deliberately annoying those people who think UK, US, Canada, et al are in israel’s pocket. So far, as far as i know, they only think UK&sons are in the israeli pocket, but nevertheless, only fire words at zionists.
In spite of the fact that only firing bullets at land robbers may work!

Btw, in my class i only have my wife. And that is plenty; she being like hillary, who needs more like her!

It wld make more sense to reaffirm that lots of politicians in US and canada are of christian cult and probably getting money from white ‘jews’. And, if they take money from ‘jews’, they are beholden to these ‘jews’.

I do admit that i do not know to what degree are politicos beholden to white or even dark ‘jews’ and how exactly.
I do asssert confidently that most ‘jews’ do not differ from most americans. Rich white ‘jews’ or rich whites, latinos, blacks seem basicly the same in all major issues.

Rich ‘jews’ [spielberg, chomsky, et al] lament the fact that indigenes had been exterminated or that usans have no health care. How about rich blacks, latinos/latinas, or whites?
How about clinton, gore, forbes, gingrich, et al?
I’d like to learn what these people have said about the two matters.

Lesson? Some rich goyim are even worse for us than some rich ‘jews’! tnx

Turks accuse Israel of war crimes at int’l court

Turkish lawyers bid for war crimes case against Israel for raid on Gaza blockade-busting ship

    ARTHUR MAX
    AP News

    Oct 14, 2010 10:23 EDT

Turkish lawyers representing pro-Palestinian activists filed a complaint Thursday with the International Criminal Court accusing Israel of committing war crimes in May when its troops raided a boat trying to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

It was unclear whether the prosecutor would agree to pursue the case or whether the court has jurisdiction. But the filing reignited an issue that has severely strained Israel’s relations with Turkey, previously its strongest ally in the Muslim world, and keeps Israel on the defensive over its much-criticized Gaza blockade.

A delegation representing some 300 activists and a Turkish nongovernment organization submitted the complaint to the prosecutor’s office in The Hague seeking an investigation into the May 31 raid.

Nine Turkish citizens, including 19-year-old Furkan Dogan who had dual U.S.-Turkish nationality, were killed during the melee after Israeli troops rappelled from helicopters onto the deck of the ship Mavi Marmara before dawn.

“I have confidence the international court and the prosecutor will take this case,” said Ahmet Dogan, Furkan’s father.

Israel has said its troops fired live ammunition only after they were attacked by activists with clubs and metal bars and they felt their lives were in danger.

Attorney Ugur Sevgili said the victims want Israel investigated for torture, inhuman treatment, the taking of hostages and other violations of the Geneva war crimes convention.

“We demanded from the prosecutor to initiate an investigation and prosecute the perpetrators of this crime,” Sevgili said. “We didn’t mention any Israeli soldiers or any Israeli politicians. We just told them that we believe war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed.”

The court, which began work in 2002 as the world’s first permanent war crimes tribunal, receives hundreds of complaints every year, but so far has filed indictments against 17 war crimes suspects — all of them involved in African conflicts.

Dogan, speaking outside the court’s headquarters, said he thought politics might get in the way of justice.

“I believe that people who killed my son will be prosecuted. However, this case also has international and political dimensions,” he said.

A U.N.-appointed panel of human rights experts, chaired by a former judge of the international court, found last month that Israel violated human rights law during its interception of the flotilla carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade for three years.

Israel rejected the panel’s findings, which it said were biased and one-sided, and said the U.N. Human Rights Council that appointed the panel is heavily weighted in the Palestinians’ favor.

The court normally intercedes only if the country involved is among the 114 nations that have endorsed the court’s founding treaty. Israeli is not a signatory, but the ship was flying the flag of the Comoros Island, which is a member of the court.

Sevgili said he expected the Comoros to support the victims’ application to the court or file its own complaint.

The prosecutor also may initiate an investigation even if the accused country does not belong to the court — but only if he determines that the country is unable to launch its own credible investigation of human rights abuses.

Among the complaints submitted and presumably pending in the prosecutor’s office is an application by the Palestinian Authority 18 months ago asking for a war crimes investigation into Israel’s brief yet deadly 2008 war in Gaza.

Israel Raid on Gaza Flotilla: US Failure to Condemn Despite UN Findings

JURIST Contributing Editor Marjorie Cohn of Thomas Jefferson School of Law says despite United Nations Human Rights Council findings that Israel clearly broke international law in its raid of the Gaza Strip Flotilla, the US has yet to condemn the action…

On May 31, the Israeli military attacked a flotilla of ships in International waters. The vessels were carrying humanitarian supplies to the people in the Gaza Strip, who suffer under a punishing blockade by Israel. The stated aims of the flotilla were to draw international attention to the situation in Gaza and the effect of the blockade; to break the blockade; and to deliver humanitarian assistance and supplies to Gaza.

During the attack, Israeli soldiers killed 9 people, seriously wounded more than 50, and detained 750. They also confiscated or destroyed equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The United Nations Human Rights Council sent an independent fact finding mission to investigate violations of international law resulting from the Israeli attacks on the flotilla. The Mission, with Judge Karl T. Hudson-Philips, Q.C., retired Judge of the International Criminal Court presiding, interviewed 112 witnesses and examined forensic and other evidence, assisted by experts in forensic pathology, military issues, and firearms. Israel refused to cooperate with the independent investigation.

In a 56-page draft report [PDF] (on the linked site), released on September 21, the Mission concluded that the Israeli military “demonstrated levels of totally unnecessary and incredible violence. It betrayed an unacceptable level of brutality. Such conduct,” the report added, “cannot be justified or condoned on security or any others grounds. It constituted grave violations of human rights law and international humanitarian law.”

The Mission made the following findings:

Passengers on the vessels and their luggage were subjected to “security checks similar to those found in airports before boarding, including body searches,” to ensure that they were not carrying weapons. “At no stage was a request made by the Israeli Navy for the cargo to be inspected.”

The Israelis fired live ammunition from an Israeli helicopter onto the top deck of the Turkish ship, Mavi Marmara, before soldiers boarded the vessel by descending from the aircraft. Although some of the passengers used chairs, sticks, a box of plates and other objects to
resist the soldiers, there was “no evidence to suggest that any of the passengers used firearms or that any firearms were taken on board the ship.”

During the operation to secure control of the top deck, the Israeli forces landed soldiers from three helicopters in a 15-minute period. The use of live ammunition resulted in fatal injuries to four passengers and injuries to at least 19 others, 14 with gunshot wounds.

Israeli soldiers continued shooting at passengers who were already wounded, with live ammunition, soft baton charges and plastic bullets. “There was considerable live fire from Israeli soldiers on the top deck and a number of passengers were injured or killed whilst trying to take refuge inside the door or assisting others to do so.”

Furkan Dogan, a 19-year old with dual Turkish and U.S. citizenship, was one of the people killed by the Israeli forces. He was hit with live fire while filming with a small video camera on the top deck. He received five bullet wounds. “All of the entry wounds were on the back of his body, except for the face wound, which was delivered at point blank range while he was lying on the ground on his back.”

Many people were forced to kneel on the outer deck in harsh conditions for many hours and people were subjected to physical mistreatment and verbal abuse, unnecessarily tight handcuffing, and the denial of access to toilets and food.

Israeli authorities confiscated, withheld, and in some cases destroyed the private property of many hundreds of passengers on board the vessels.

There is a “severe humanitarian situation in Gaza, the destruction of the economy and the prevention of reconstruction.” Israel’s blockade was “inflicting disproportionate damage upon the civilian population” in Gaza, and is therefore illegal. Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits collective punishment of civilians under occupation. One of the principal motives behind Israel’s imposition of the blockade was “a desire to punish the people of the Gaza Strip for having elected Hamas” in the 2005 election. There is “no doubt that Israel’s actions and policies amount to collective punishment.” In this conclusion, the Mission explicitly supported the findings of Richard Falk, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, as well as those of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The firing of rockets and other munitions of war into Israeli territory from Gaza “constitutes serious violations of international and international humanitarian law. But action in response which constitutes collective punishment of the civilian population of Gaza is not lawful in the present or in any circumstances.”

Another question for the boy Hague who has had many things on his mind this summer! He even betrayed his wife’s privacy in one matter that caused a media storm.

+Why are you toadying round a criminal dictator?+

Craig Murray writes of the attention that the British Ambassador to Uzbekistan is paying to Karimov’s daughter’s commercial interests. (He was of course a previous Ambassador to that country until he ‘resigned’).
I think the answer lies in the fact that the UK depends on Karimov keeping the supply route to Aghanistan open and never mind the torture and the human rights abuses.

I had a lovely emetic afternoon yesterday having just read what I found to be a typically repulsive article by the loathsome Nick Cohen. He was, -can you believe it?!-pissing in the pockets of his fellow Chosenness, the, (in my opinion)even more repellent Howard Jacobson. It was all in honour of Jacobson’s award of the Booker Prize, apparently made, so it seems to me,to shut Jacobson up in his interminable whinging that his genius had never been properly recognised.
Now, of course, I have no intention of buying any book by Jacobson, because I do not wish to contribute one shekel to the coffers of someone I believe to be an utter (vulgar euphemism for solid bodily waste). I have read some descriptions of Jacobson’s ‘comic’ novel, and it seems-mirabile dictu-to be all about Jews, wannabe goyim who wish they were Jews and various other, minor, in the hierarchy of species, characters. The narcissistic self-obsession is wonderful to behold!
The repellent Cohen informed me that one of Jacobson’s central obsessions is ‘self-hating Jews’, you know the type, those that think Jews and non-Jews are morally and humanly equivalent, and that killing hundreds of Gazan children might just be a crime, and they don’t appreciate it being done ‘in their name’. Apparently these self-haters don’t realise that we are in a ‘Clash of Civilizations’ between utter evil (them) and absolute good (the Jews and their employees).
One benefit of Jacobson’s Booker win was the opportunity to peruse a column he produced at the time of the Gaza massacre in 2008-9. I’d never seen this before, but it had all the trademarks that, in my opinion, make Jacobson such a complete (vulgar euphemism for the orifice of the fundament). I think it contained at least a dozen Big Lies, uttered with that brazen chutzpah that is the avid, convinced, Zionazi’s signature. And it was built around a refrain, a noxious, snide, repetition of the cant that the outrage felt at this brutal, cowardly, carefully planned massacre could only be explained as ‘anti-semitism’, Israel and its Holy People being utterly incapable of any crime.
What is really ghastly is not, in my opinion, the dominance of this type in Western media and society, not their crazed arrogance, mendacity and vilification of people outraged by brutality, but fact that these lies, calumnies and villainies are hardly ever confronted, by those who are, allegedly, our cultural paragons. If only one other Booker contender had stated that the award of the prize to a brazen apologist for mass child murder might just be scandalous, there might be some hope. Of course it would come at the cost of their career, and a lifetime of villainous abuse by the Chosen Ones and their employees and lap-dogs, but one day, in the far, or perhaps even near, future, when Jacobson will be, I believe, nothing but an excruciating blot on a footnote in the history of 21st century Western barbarism, those who confronted his type of Zionism moral turpitude would, I believe, be looked on with admiration by posterity.

And we must stop upsetting Rupert Mulga.

Yes, mary, I saw Moloch’s little tirade (a lie a line, the Zionazi Gold Standard)published in his increasingly deranged, dangerous and malevolent rag, ‘The Australian’ just the other day. Moloch apparently wishes to transfer the ‘Tea Party’ malignancy to his homeland, and The Australian’ and the other even more scrofulous of his scurrilous rags are fomenting raging, Rightwing, mobs over several controversies. The man and his Evil Empire are, in my opinion, human malignancy at its most depraved, preaching fear, hatred and violence at every opportunity. Actually I do think that there are many signs that the Right has passed a tipping-point in its descent into sub-fascist insanity, and has gone stark, raving, bonkers. I think the combination of imperial over-reach, the refusal of the untermenschen in the Middle East to simply give up and die and leave the ubermenschen in peace, the collapse of the Yankee heartland into mass poverty and social decay and the rise of China and the end of the reign of the White bullies, has unhinged the minds of those who saw their eternal dominance as ordained by God-a God who, I have no doubt, looks suspiciously like Rupert Moloch, in Moloch’s mind’s eye, at least.

Lawyers establish Flotilla Justice Group to coordinate legal action
    on behalf of flotilla victims

[Doha, Qatar, 25 October] International legal experts and lawyers representing victims of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla today announced the establishment of the “Flotilla Justice Group.” The announcement came at the conclusion of a two-day meeting held on 23 and 24 October, aimed at coordinating legal actions to hold Israel accountable for its 31 May 2010 attack on the Freedom Flotilla. The meeting, hosted by the Doha-based Al Fakhoora campaign, brought together 70 representatives from 20 countries, to follow up on work that began at the first lawyers’ meeting held in Istanbul on 15 July.

The international advocacy groups, legal and media experts, and lawyers in attendance met in a number of workshops to devise a comprehensive strategy for national, regional and international legal action, inter-organizational coordination, and media mobilization. “The Flotilla Justice Group” will serve as a coordination mechanism for facilitating communication and the exchange of information between lawyers working on behalf of flotilla victims around the world.

Bettahar Boudjellal, a Qatar-based international human rights expert, said, “Israel’s attack on the Freedom Flotilla breached international, human rights and humanitarian law. Our efforts to unify the legal actions through a designated coordination apparatus will allow us to collectively bring the State of Israel to justice. More importantly, it will serve as a foundation for responding to Israel’s future violations.”

The conference workshops were led by prominent personalities within the growing movement to end Israel’s strangulation of Gaza as well as its persistent human rights violations throughout the occupied Palestinian territory. Participants in the meeting included representatives from the following countries: Bahrain, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Canada, Egypt, France, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Palestine, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Yemen.

“The creation of the Flotilla Justice Group is a vital step forward on the road to holding Israel accountable for its attack on our flotilla, and their ongoing abuse of the Palestinian people” said the Freedom Flotilla organizers.

Organizations and firms participating in the conference included: the Turkish ?nsan Hak ve Hürriyetleri ?nsani Yard?m Vakf? (IHH), the Free Gaza Movement, European Campaign to End Siege on Gaza (ECESG), Council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU), the Elmadag Law Firm from Turkey, Mazlumdar — the Turkish Human Rights Association, the UK-based Hickman and Rose law firm, Ship to Gaza – Greece, Ship to Gaza – Sweden, Indonesian Muslims’ Lawyer Team, the Muslim Lawyers Association of South Africa, and others.

Fakhoora is an international campaign which aims to secure the freedom to learn for Palestinian students in Gaza and the West Bank. The campaign is named after a United Nations girls’ prep school in Gaza’s Jabaliya refugee camp that was the scene of an attack by Israeli tank shells on January 6, 2009.
