The Words

(for Lenny Bruce and George Carlin)

If a word exists, if a word has meaning,
Should it be left unsaid, not written not
Heard, not be seen? Even if obscene?

It had been said there are seven words
That cannot ever be said on television.
And then he said them—for an audience!
Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker,
And, of course, tits. Its like popping verbal zits.

These days these words are often said almost
Anytime, anywhere one might be, and even
On TV or a in a poem such as this. But shit
And piss, fuck cunt cocksucker motherfucker,
And, yes, of course, tits, have numbed our wits.

They hardly serve a purpose, like a kick in the ass
Or balls. But, now, now let us not say things like fact,
Truth, or evidence, for these words give such offense.
