The word peace once rang out almost
everywhere, from capital cities to rural
campuses, on five continents, filling the
air with its wisdom and its pain, heard at
meetings of important men and in high
school debates, until it appeared only when
disillusioned dreamers stared into their
coffee cups at all-night greasy spoons, still
hoping the current wind might change
direction, but by 2000 it had turned into
the running joke in a movie about beauty
contests.
