absence of life

maybe it’s time to throw out
the tv,
computer,
and subscription to the
ny times –

maybe it’s time to stand upright,
walk amongst the other
bipeds,
the emus and orangutans –

maybe i should adjust the light,
note the absence of life, delve
deep into the subtext of this
gloryhole mediocrity –

maybe i should slow down,
stop running, live a quiet life
in the desert, out in the sand and
yuccas and Joshua trees –

maybe i should pull the needle from
my arm, the rolled dollar from my nose –

maybe i should forget everything and simply
learn how to exist –
