Portrait of Muni (2)

(for M)

Paja Jovanovic (1859-1957)

In the mist and shadows
uncertainty or fear
with the light
with the sight
beauty so near
no candle, no torch
exposes our woes
life illuminates
letting tenderness
chase the night

No hierarch celestial
no jealous god
no royalty to dwell
with greed ensnared
life itself is sacred
where divinity is shared.

In the midst of the hallowed
serenity and cheer
with the light
with the might
sincerity, not fear
the smile and the kiss
depose all love’s foes
life illuminates
its gardens
with the fruits of repose.
