Hand Over Hand

they tried to pull
you down. Slammed
doors and criticisms.
They were only lighting
a fuse.
That’s the thing about
closing doors. It
means they are shut.
Do not make your way
with the mean-spirited,
those who try to wound
with rumor, who treat
their own tongues like
weapons. That is something
like a proverb. They spell
their own downfall with
each critical syllable while
we can find the sounds
that the builders make.
