The newscasters say it was
the worst mass shooting
in American history
and they say it again
and again, never mentioning

Wounded Knee
Sand Creek
Bear River
Pit River
Harney
Bridge Gulch
Puelo de Taos
and Acoma

Which begs the question
of exactly when
American history began.
