Chasing the Dragon

It’s never enough…
no matter how
sweet the feast,
no matter how
true the love,
no matter how
far out the high.

It’s never enough…
no matter how
long the relationship,
no matter how
bright the sun,
no matter how
beautiful the rainbow.

It’s never enough…
no matter how
many poems get published,
no matter how
many bills get paid,
no matter how
many fans applaud.

It’s never enough…
no matter how
toned the body becomes,
no matter how
clean the diet becomes,
no matter how
strong the muscles become.

It’s never enough…
no matter how
deep the tongue enters,
no matter how
deep the organ pushes,
no matter how
deep the fall goes.

It’s never enough…
no matter how
good the grades are,
no matter how
many tests are aced,
no matter how
many diplomas hang on the wall.

It’s never enough…
no matter how
well rehearsed the act is,
no matter how
strong the performance goes,
no matter how
many groupies get laid.

It’s never enough…
no matter how
enlivened the sermon is,
no matter how
the congregation receives it,
no matter how
many tears are wept in joy.

It’s never enough…
no matter what you say,
no matter what you do,
no matter how you act,
no matter how far you go,
no matter, no matter, no matter,

it’s simply not good enough.
