Democrats and Abortion |

Following recent articles in the mainstream press on the Democratic National Committee's two top nominees, if any doubt still exists within the minds of deluded liberal-bourgeois reformists concerning the moral bankruptcy of the Democratic Party, one wonders how much more evidence is going to be necessary. Last week, the Los Angeles Times reported that the two leading candidates for the DNC Chairmanship are phony “anti-war” candidate Howard Dean and former Indiana Congressman and reactionary Tim Roemer. As the Federation has noted, Dean is a pro-occupation racist-imperialist in anti-war clothing. He opposed the war only because of its unilateral execution -- NOT because of fundamental opposition to the doctrine of pre-emptive war used to justify it. But despite his phony maverick persona, Dean and his candidacy may well fail due to the Democratic Party establishment's perception of him as a threat nonetheless -- a perception that lead to their bankrolling of attack ads on him during the primary. Thus our attention ought focus on Roemer and the implications of a Roemer chairmanship. As the Times article notes further, Roemer is staunchly anti-choice, in their words, “an abortion foe who argues that the party cannot rebound from its losses in the November election unless it shows more tolerance on one of society's most emotional conflicts.” Among Roemer's misogynistic and sexist legislative hits: a vote to bar transportation for minors to get an abortion, a vote to ban funding for birth control and family planning abroad, and a vote for the ban on so-called "partial birth" abortions, a phony and biomedically baseless term the Federation has consistently rejected. Roemer's escalation to the top of the heap vying for the DNC Chairmanship follows the Party's nomination of Nevada Senator Harry Reid for Senate Minority leader. Reid earned a less than 30% rating from NARAL, the country's leading reproductive rights group. Squadrons of Democratic Party heavy-hitters have lined up behind Roemer, including Nancy Pelosi, a supposed “progressive”. Should Roemer become DNC Chairman, the Party will be lead by two anti-choice, sexist, white heterosexual males. As for Dean, on abortion, he may be little better, offering equivocal-nonsensical statements such as follows: “We can change our vocabulary, but I don't think we ought to change our principles.” The Howard Dean train of euphemistic BS rolls on. The current right-wing shift of the Democratic Party (was a further shift even possible? Yes, apparently) follows months of dogmatic Democratic baiting of Ralph Nader supporters and the manipulative and false charge that a Nader candidacy threatened women's health rights. In fact, it now appears that the Democrats’ threat is far greater and real. Self-identified “progressives” who continue to support the Party need an identity check.
