The Democratic base has expressed itself in the only reasonable way it could: By not voting. After seeing every single person I voted for lose this week, I kinda wish I had not voted as well. However, I do believe that AZ is a bellwether for the rest of the US, and if that doesn't make people wet their pants at the thought of a fascist takeover of the USA, nothing will. Until candidates come along who recognize that poor citizens, concerned-about-the-environment citizens, human rights advocates, and laborites together can defeat the Tom Hornes and Russell Pearces of this country, it's all Arizona, and eventually English-only.
Otherwise, it's a Hopi vote- no vote.

I first thought you were carrying these signs around as a covert way to get to speak to these people. You are serious though and I must say that acting clever and indignant only to at the end of your article, begrudgingly acknowledge them as your betters getting your vote anyways is pathetic.

"Why is it the Democrats are continuously attempting to distance themselves from their liberal base?"

Here is the answer to your question, the Democrats want to move further to the right and their "base" holds them back from this. The Democrats like the Republicans are loyal servants of the corporate kleptoplutocratic elite. However they see the fact Blacks, poor people and the working class vote for them might be taken by some right thinking persons to imply that they actually support the interests of the non-elite against those of their real masters. Therefore they want to discourage the aforesaid poor people, Blacks and the working class from voting for them, in time this may convince some who until now have voted Republican to switch to the Democrats and they won't need votes from the unwashed and the hoi polloi.

beverly...I agree. I gave up on the dem/repubs many years ago. Here in Vermont there was a very good candidate for governor - an Independent named Dennis Steele. He campaigned vigorously - was very impressive. He got 1% of the vote. The problem is the voters - too many voters who are uninformed and cancel out the votes of those who have done their homework.

I hope this experience will get you and your wife to stop chopping cotton, put down the hoe, and walk off the Democratic plantation. May I suggest investing time and dollars for independent candidates (check them out thoroughly; some of them are Reps and Dems in disguise) and the Green Party. No party is perfect, but the Greens for one have a record and agenda that better addresses the interests of the poor and working classes who comprise over half this nation. Are such options longshots? Now, yes. But anti-slavery, women's, labor, and civil rights gains weren't won overnight or w/i a few years. One must start somewhere to make inroads and eventuall prevail.

Would the Democratic candidates have been better than Brewer and McCain? Judging from what has gone down in DC for the last several years, I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Democrats have had the Congressional majority since 2007; Congress and White House control since 2008. It's 2010 and we've still got war, Patriot Act, renditioning, Gitmo and now Bagram, war on dissent at home [see: surveillance, legal action against peaceful protest for ending war, animal rights, representing clients (see: Lynne Stewart)], nonexistent job market, offshoring run amok, two more corporatist toadies for Supreme Court, bailouts for banks/hard way to go for everyone else, and the list goes on. The Clinton years gave us NAFTA and financial deregulation that has brought down not just our country but most of the world.

State level? Governors and state legislatures support many of the above ill-advised adventures of their DC political brethren and do little to buck the system. From cheerleading for war to scapegoating labor, immigrants (that their corporate benefactors keep hiring illegally and legally via HB1s and such), and minorities to championing privatization - there's little dissent at the state level for Washington's high crimes and misdemeanors. For example, given the current bankster fraud fest, how many states have implemented a North Dakota-style banking system - one that has proven over decades to be a more stable deal?

It's pointless to continue the charade of electing Democrats who do Republicans' dirty work. The lesser of two evils game has been a disaster. Please don't expend shoe leather and gas money on shilling for hustlers who get you to do all the work and have the gall and insensitivity to make you look like a fool for asking legit questions. Stop being a chump.
