Mary, it looks to me like a 1°C drop in atmospheric temperature below the soot level will effectively combat 50 years of global warming. And as for the temperature above the layer there's nothing about it so what does it matter?

Oil in the water of the Gulf of Mexico. What's the next thing to mess up the planet? Well it's Sir Richard Branson's idiotic proposal for sub- space tourism. I was listening to a radio programme yesterday where this nonsense and its likely effect on the climate was discussed. The soot released by the proposed 1,000 flights a year will lodge in the middle layer of the stratosphere for ever, causing a one degree centigrade rise in temperature above the layer and a one degree drop beneath it. This blogger elaborates on the scheme. We should find a way to put a stop to it.

Branson's airline has made record profits this year yet he is complaining about the rise in airport taxes.

Bush created his own reality, his war on terror and invasion of Iraq and Obama is playing the same game with his bully pulpit, issuing the correct talking points in the administration playbook, managing the message, and woe betide you if you should stray. It's over, let's not dwell on the past, let's move forward.

They did the same thing on a smaller scale after 911, issuing an all-clear when it was not.

The greater good for the largest number of people sometimes requires sacrifices. Tourism, property values, the future of drilling in the Gulf, the economic life of all the Gulf states is at risk if the oil disaster cannot be papered over with a happy face. Some people get sick, some die. How many? Is it right to kill the economic life of an entire region in the name of a few thousand that can be denied and hidden from view so that the entire region may live?

The question is how many? Are millions getting sick? Better not explore that issue, better not do systematic blood testing of the population to determine levels of contamination. Better suppress images of massive fish kills. It's a political gamble. It's a numbers game. The coverup can't hold if the numbers are too large.

Oil dispersant breaks up the oil, political dispersant breaks up any coherent challenge to the coverup. Those who organize to get the facts and attempt to get around the cover story meet with political dispersant in 100's of ways as any union organizer can explain. The corporate state is very powerful and unsympathetic to the fate of individuals.

And what if there is a massive health crisis in the near term, with illness and death on a scale that cannot be denied? Is that happening now, is that in the making? It must be more than "anecdotal" reports, it must be undeniable like an epidemic that challenges the hospital system. If that is actually happening, then what? The Gulf region will come to resemble the region adjoining Chernobyl. The Gulf region will die.

So, Obama has no choice but to try to create the reality he would like to see. He knows what happens to presidents who can't manufacture the appropriate smiley face. The power of the corporate state cannot ultimately create the reality it would like to see. It can't ultimately fix the damage it does. It Is in truth on a collision course with reality. It may escape the consequences this time........if the numbers stay relatively small and the coverup holds and the bacteria are industrious and idefatiguable.....
