"Problem with many in the left is their self-righteous arrogance."

Statements like that only serve to undermine whatever point you want to make.

"Perhaps many of them will grow out of it and reach such stages of ‘enlightenment’ that teafoe2 has mastered."

One could say the same about gangbangers....

About "dream act" itself, the thing is nasty all around and should be scrapped. Adding "community service" requirements for schooling is adding slave labour and it is also a way to weasel in a military draft.

Problem with many in the left is their self-righteous arrogance. Saying that my students are 'backward' for wanting to join the military shows this reader's narrow-mindedness, preachy and sanctimonious inability to accept that people may have view and values that don't conform to this 'Renaissance' man.
Besides, students all over, primarily due to age and experience, are shaped by their environment. Perhaps many of them will grow out of it and reach such stages of 'enlightenment' that teafoe2 has mastered.

"As much as I would like to take the military completely out of the bill, that is unrealistic. Many of our students actually do want to join the military. For many, it carries on a family tradition."

WHAT? wow.

If some of your students are so backward as to want to join the military, what's stopping them? Why do you want to cooperate in facilitating criminal idiocy?

And screw their Good Soldier Schweik "family traditions".

This is the kind of "realism" that got us where we are, saddled with Obummer.

The idea of slave labor as uncool goes without saying. No community service should be done gratis. There should be a stipend of some kind as well as housing, etc. support; perhaps similar to the Peace Corps but modified to fit working/living conditions in the US.

I saw the debate about the dream act on democracy now!, and I definitely agree the legislation is terrible as it is now--a ruse to get undocumented young people (primarily poor young men) into the military while guaranteeing them nothing except likely ptsd and possible death. I don't, however, think their should be unpaid community service making high school students into slaves for "communities" who don't give a damn about them and offer no services whatsoever, no jobs, no freedom from pollution. The dream act should perhaps allow people to work as park rangers for two years after high school for money as a "community service" option, but nothing else.
