<i>You can’t get that statement out of the mealy-mouthed “leaders” and supposed radicals in the antiwar movement.</i>

Very astute. I recall Michael Albert of Z-Mag writing a <a href="http://www.zcommunications.org/support-our-troops-by-michael-albert" rel="nofollow">"Support the Troops"</a> screed in 2003 at the height of the anti-war movement against Iraq.
The film 'Avatar' , like others of this genre seems to serve as a pressure valve. When individuals have seen the film they report with sentimentality flowing from their eyes, that they have been touched, they have been renewed because of the experience. In the next moment, they are discussing their stock options, the correct pesticides to use on their garden project and how much they have to spend on their summer wardrobe. This type of film simply helps to control and direct interest away from the real issues. Individuals then may continue to believe that they are thinking, considerate and effective humans. Of course, we already know that their momentary taste of environmental, social responsibility has satisfied any need to 'know' and they can now get back to the business of organising their lifestyle. thank-gawd! The lifestyle still does not require any real thought

In Australia the Rightwing psychos, the opinion-writers and columnists that infest our media, went ape-shit over Avatar and Hurt Locker. Hurt Locker was the greatest thing, showing just how hard it was bringing 'democracy' and 'freedom' to the savage ingrates in Iraq, and a testament to the scarcely credible decency and goodness of our American 'allies', the greatest force for moral good in history. Oops-after Israel, of course. Avatar, on the other hand was a sick parody by 'self-loathing Westerners', preaching the evil of moral equivalence. It was attacked with that psychotic excess of invective and diatribe that seems to be the mark of excellence, particularly in Rupert Moloch's Empire of Evil. The targets in attacking Avatar were Hollywood 'liberals' (our hatemongers borrow heavily fron US Rightwing invective), opponents of the entirely benevolent US/Israel global empire of Goodness (ie 'friends of the terrorists' and 'anti-semites') and that great enemy of the day, the fiendish 'greenies'. Hatred of environmentalists has been a Rightwing crusade since they first emerged in this country at the time of the flooding of Lake Pedder in Tasmania in the early 1970s. The Rightwing psychotics soon realised that environmentalism contained, if properly understood, a devastating critique of capitalism. The neoplastic religion of unending growth, the very essence of capitalism,is, fairly clearly, given commonsense and the evidence of one's eyes, inimical to life on the planet. This truth has been bitterly opposed by the Right with increasing hysteria and manic determination ever since. Environmentalists are right up the top of the Right's compendious Hit Parade of daemon figures to be vilified and lied about on every occasion. Meanwhile the ice melts, the methane leaks out, the animals disappear, the oceans acidify and weather becomes more extreme.
