What is even more amazing to me is the total lack of engineering, management or media attention to the simplest "fix" in the event any car goes into free acceleration... TURN OFF THE KEY!!! Ya, the driver loses power brakes and steering, but the "emergency" then only lasts a few more seconds, not miles and miles. Sure, this doesn't help in cases where a collision is only milliseconds away, but where there's enough time to call 9-1-1??? But heroic stories of police cruisers being summoned from the driver's frantic 9-1-1 cell call make much better "breaking news"...
