Everyday life in the Israeli colonies

‘The negotiations affairs department of the Palestine Liberation Organization collects information daily from all the districts of the occupied territories (Gaza and the West Bank, as well as Jerusalem) and publishes it in a daily situation report by the Palestinian Monitoring Group. For the sake of convenience, the report categorizes the events and then provides details for each district.

[On] Wednesday (24th February 2010), a total of 212 occupation-related incidents were recorded. Examples include: four physical assaults (which took place in the West Bank, and included civilians being beaten in Nablus and Jerusalem); one injury (a civilian hurt in a clash in Daan); eight military shooting attacks (two of which took place in Gaza, two were in the midst of raids, and one came from a military outpost; 39 army raids (one in Gaza); 28 arrests; and 12 detentions at checkpoints and in residential areas. The items on the checklist include home demolition (none that day), the leveling of agricultural land (one, in Gaza), and construction of the separation wall (at 22 locations).

The report also includes categories for property destruction (seven cases, including the destruction of wells and crops); checkpoint closure (eight cases at five checkpoints, including instances of impeded access); mobile (“flying”) checkpoints (23); permanent closure of village access roads (seven); closure of main roads (40, (including four in Bethlehem and 14 in Hebron, and the village of Jaba east of Ramallah); closure of main crossing points (four, including the permanent blockade of Gaza); disruptions at school (three cases, including the throwing of two tear gas canisters); violence on the part of settlers (one, in Sheikh Jarrah); demonstrations (one, in Hebron). The checklist also includes Palestinian attacks (none on that day).’

Mark your calendars – the 6th International Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) will take place across the globe from from the 1st to the 14th of March 2010!

Since it was first launched in 2005, IAW has grown to become one of the most important global events in the Palestine solidarity calendar. Last year, more than 40 cities around the world participated in the week’s activities, which took place in the wake of Israel’s brutal assault against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. IAW continues to grow with new cities joining this year.

IAW 2010 takes place following a year of incredible successes for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement on the global level. Lectures, films, and actions will highlight some of theses successes along with the many injustices that continue to make BDS so crucial in the battle to end Israeli Apartheid. Speakers and full programme for each city will be available soon.

Careful, that sounds like a challenge. As the author points out, the legitimacy and security of Israel is far from assured. The whole shibboleth could come crashing down rather quickly. Advanced weaponry is no match for a determined popular movement. The Israel that emerges after this Israel has fled into exile will be the Israel of prophecy, where Arabs and Jews will live side by side in peace.

You talk about the dismantling of “scaffold”, however Models “A” and “B” still maintain those two ugliest pieces of scaffold – nationalism and religion. Without those two pieces removed, things will remain the same, not just in the Middle East but worldwide.

Look outside the square for Model “C” – a complete dismantling of the scaffold (power) structures.

One of the thousands of victims of their fascism, is – Dr. Izseldin Abuelaish 54, a Hebrew-speaking Gaza-born Israeli doctor at Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Aviv and peace activist, who saved hundreds of Jewish lives. Izeldin’s three daughters were murdered as result of Israeli shelling during the last days of 23-day attack on Gaza.

Dr. Izseldin Abuelaish along with his remaing three children live in my city of Toronto.

Mary, I thought the clip pretty harmless, just a cute little clip to encourage immigration. In any case nowhere does it say or imply that the family in the film are moving to an illegal settlement, so your whole point seems to have gone “poof!”.

The big lie is that the state of Israel is a true democracy to all its citizens. The citizens of Israel are not allowed to claim that Israel is their nation state. The claim that Israel is the state of the Jewish people, and not the state of its own citizens, is the highest form audacity and discrimination. Add to that, the laws and practices that are enshrined in the Israeli system, are a clear confirmation of a manifest form of racism in its most blatant form, against Israel’s own Muslim and Christian citizens.
