Thanks for your comment, Jeremy.

Pedagogically speaking, you may be giving the article too "close" a reading

It is, of course, a satirical and ironic piece. The speaker here is rolling out platitudes one after another. That's part of the game. She's an unreliable narrator or witness. Her purpose is to indoctrinate the students. So, she'll throw out phrases and definitions which may or may not be wholly or partly applicable. The point is confusion of disciplines and murkiness. The System, in fact, is full of cliches that "good citizens" will live and die by and sometimes kill for. The goal of this sort of "education" is mis- and dis-information, obeisance to authority, obedience.

<i>We know that smart and crafty people always get together to form cartels, meshing economic, political and social lives to pursue their own best interests—and to hell with everyone else! This is a law of Nature known as “survival of the fittest.” It’s also known as the “invisible hand” of the market.</i>

Actually, the invisible hand has nothing to do with political cartels. Cartels, or monopolies, can only exist under two circumstances:

1. Political power: forcing "customers" to buy the good or service (<i>see: public education system, USPS, Amtrak, etc</i>)

2. Economic power: attracting customers with goods and services delivered at a fair price.

The second method of obtaining a monopoly is only theoretical as it has never existed in any market.

It really upsets me when well-intentioned people misdiagnose our problems and end up blaming the free market. It just ain't so!

Gary:
As always I find your work both frightening and enlightening. I have just finished reading Dan Browns new fiction book "The Lost Symbol". As with his other book "The Davinci Code" I find I have to read these books in front of my computer and keep looking up all the organizations, rituals, etc., that he states as factual. While reading your article and having read all about the New World Order; Freemasons, Noetic Sciences, Illuminati online, and your own book Holy Grail, Holy Grail, it has opened up a wealth of knowledge and information I had never imagined. I read Conspirators' Hierarchy: The Story of the Committee of 300 by Dr. John Coleman online. These are his words, not mine: "A One World Government and one-unit monetary system, under permanent non-elected hereditary oligarchists who self-select from among their numbers in the form of a feudal system as it was in the Middle Ages. In this One World entity, population will be limited by restrictions on the number of children per family, diseases, wars, famines, until 1 billion people who are useful to the ruling class, in areas which will be strictly and clearly defined, remain as the total world population.

There will be no middle class, only rulers and the servants. All laws will be uniform under a legal system of world courts practicing the same unified code of laws, backed up by a One World Government police force and a One World unified military to enforce laws in all former countries where no national boundaries shall exist. The system will be on the basis of a welfare state; those who are obedient and subservient to the One World Government will be rewarded with the means to live; those who are rebellious will simple be starved to death or be declared outlaws, thus a target for anyone who wishes to kill them. Privately owned firearms or weapons of any kind will be prohibited."

Then I re-read your article again and to be honest it scares the hell out of me. My world as I have known it for 61 years is nothing like I thought it was, my fears grow every day just by watching the news propaganda.

I think I would rather be less informed, listen to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett and dream, for I have been dreaming all these years and am afraid to wake up.

We need to know, we need to be informed, but as with me, it may scare the hell out of us.

Thanks, David. Good comment.

O'Neil is one of my favorites, principally for "A Moon for the Misbegotten," "Long Day's Journey Into Night," and "Desire Under the Elms." I know "The Hairy Ape" in bits and pieces. I'll check out your allusion.

Gary:

I refer you to Scene Five of O'N eill's play, "The Hairy Ape," penned in 1921 and described by the author as a comedy.

This is where the common folk stand in the view of our elected and unelected officials. We are now rendered repulsive and nearly invisible.
