I cannot believe that you are attempting (without success) to justify this cruelty ie ‘It’s all for the sake of cheap food’. One cruel act leads to another viz the slaughter of more than 90 people by incineration in Afghanistan earlier today. (news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/8237287.stm)

On debeaking. I don’t have mine done, but chickens are cannibalistic. One will see something interesting on another’s butt and pick at it. As soon as blood is drawn, the others join in. Debeaking isn’t necessary if you provide the right conditions–plenty of room for the birds to roam, etc. But in commercial operations where you can’t (again for cost reasons), the damage done to individual birds can be pretty gruesome. There are two sides to every story, and, in this case, procedure. I suggest that unless you have done that, you have no right making judgement calls.

It’s all for the consumer, most of whom really don’t care. They are not experts who make generous incomes by offering their “opinions,” but rather working people too busy trying to afford food for their kids.

This method is probably the most cost-effective for a large operation. Small operations have their own way of dealing with unwanted males, not much prettier. If the consumer wants eggs and wants them cheap, producers do what they must to stay competitive.

A lot of the complainers are all talk. If a small producer adds a buck to a dozen eggs and tells the buyer it’s to cover the cost of putting old hens or extra roosters out to pasture, the consumer will not care/pay. Trust me, I know.

This is one of the reasons I’ve wished on occasion that I rescued chickens instead of cats (no offense to my cats, whom I love), because it would mean I could buy chicken feed instead of cat food, which is where these chicks end up – in pet food cans.

I GUESS THEY THINK ABORTION IS NOT CRUELTY. MAYBE THEY THINK ABORTION IS OK, BUT KILLING LITTLE CHICKS IS HORRIBLE.
