I liked this article even though I am partial to libertarianism and Ron Paul especially. That being said, as a Canadian, I have to say that I enjoy our "free" Health Care system in that no-one is ever denied coverage - the problem as I see it in the Canadian system is, the patient is not the customer, the government is. That means that every time a hospital admits a Canadian it costs them money - the system is set up to reward those health care providers that provide as little service as possible. (Not much different than the US system really)

As a consumer of health care (as we all are) it is not in our best interest to let the government pay for this service as it removes all choice and power we have as the actual users of the service. That and you invite the government to then crack down on so called "unhealthy" lifestyles.

At the end of the day, from a purely selfish point of view - a public system in the US would be disastrous to Canadians. Without a profit motive there will be very little in the way of new bio-med technology that we can then adopt.

My best idea would be to give every Canadian a Credit Card with so much money on it every year to spend as they see fit in the Health Care system. This would put the power back into the hands of the people using the service, would cut down on fraud b/c every individual would account for what they were charged and would increase the level of service a thousand times over. Seems simple!!

Actually Dan - the biggest support for war - any war - comes out of the South. That comes out of centuries of lynching and gun ownership for purposes of accomplishing same. For USB, it would mean saving on welfare money - blue states taxpayers are tired of forking over money to the red staters. The slaves should have been freed - and then the South should have been sent on its merry way.

Justin O'Connell :

"The bailout money could have easily and unquestioningly paid off all mortgages in the U.S. I repeat, all mortgages. "

I suspected the same but do not have actual data to support it. Could you please elaborate on this?

Thank you.

Since when do "free markets," which have never existed and could never exist without huge state help, "run against" centralizing power?

Markets sustain and increase the power of "private" investors.

And all "free markets" eventually produce capitalists who are rich and influential enough to put oligopolistic limits on their supposedly natural workings.

We don't have time to try to start capitalism over. We need big government, world government.
