john andrews, yes.
Fascist world was very much determined to destroy socialism in USSR, Vietnam, Cuba, Korea, and e.european countries.

Gorbachov who loved his people saw that and probably fearing eventual nato attack against mostly his people, the russians gave up on future useless militarization of USSR.

There was also too many muslims in USSR. Most are notoriously
asocial and cultish. tnx

How quaint that some people think that communism failed all by itself - that the Empire was doing no more than playing the honest citizen and 'defending freedom'. Do these people really believe that or are they paid employees of the Empire?

Even if people disregarded the long litany of covert and overt military interventions by the Empire over the last century to 'defend freedom' (as Mr Blum's books demonstrate) a brief look at the history of trade sanctions is quite rewarding. Because in almost every year since it was founded the UN (Washington's PR department) has imposed trade sanctions somewhere, places which, coincidently I'm sure, mostly happen to be fledgling socialist or communist systems. So how surprising is it that these systems fail when they are routinely strangled at birth?

Western terror about communism/socialism has never really been about the ludicrous 'threat' of armed invasion by little red men; it's been the very real possibility that the west's masses of underprivileged people might see working models of a better way to live - and start to demand the same for themselves.

The "free world" propaganda uses often a comparison between nazism and communism on the ground that both were totalitarian system. So propaganda is not content to compare communism with fascism but only with the nazism.Pat Buchanan wrote a very lauded book where he expresses his regret that England and French declared war in 3 September to Germany. He and Justin Raimondo in his today article in Antiwar and Jacob Hornbirger are very sorry that the democracies intervened and such they bring the victory to communism which, how Hornbirger wrote "in principal communism and nazism is the same".The reader understand quickly that he has not a choice:communism is nazism,Islamism is fascism, chavism is fascism, putinism is kaghebisto communism and so on.In so far i can understand nazism and the anglo-american capitalism are much more similar in its principles:social darwinism and racism. But why Buchanan and Co feel sorry:"the democracies" tried to get their dream ,to help Hitler and direct him toward Russia but "unfortunately"for them Russia won the war paying the higher price. Even in Buchanan book a photo shows Churchill speaking with Stalin and asking :"do you ever forget us" and Stalin answered:"only God can forget".

Must be great to be an American and fight for the war on terrorism. Must make Americans feel all giddy inside. Good luck America. Your camps are already built, inside the United States. Glen Beck said so, or did he!? America needs more Hollywood. Most Americans know nothing of "Hollywood". Rest in sleep America. Your horrors are just about to begin.

"Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Boys of Capital have been chortling in their martinis about the death of socialism. The word has been banned from polite conversation. And they hope that no one will notice that every socialist experiment of any significance in the twentieth century"

Had the Soviet Union really been socialist? Was it socialism or central dictatorship and suppression?
The rest of the article raises some reasonable questions.

I chuckled at Mr Blum's "loser's whine" about communism (or "socialism" as he quaintly calls it). Communism never got a fair chance and bla-bla-bla! European communism collapsed because it failed to put food on people's tables and for no other reason. All the rest is US cold war propaganda and, as always, Mr Blum's problem is that he gullibly swallows that propaganda and merely says that whatever the propaganda says was bad is good and vice versa.

Reality check. Up to about 1955, life was not much different anywhere in Europe, whether in the dictatorships or the democracies. If things had remained like that, most of Europe might well have gone communist. From 1955, though, the effect of Marshal Plan aid began to be felt and the democracies began to pull ahead. Equally, through NATO, the US paid most of Europe's defence costs, a fair arrangement since it was FDR who handed half of Europe to Stalin on a silver platter in the first place. The great wave of prosperity that swept across the European democracies in the 1960s left the communist countries standing and, not surprisingly, left their populations sullen and resentful. The Prague Spring in 1968 was the Communists' attempt to save themselves and it could easily have worked. Because of Vietnam (and the American bad habit of pushing people around!), the US had discredited itself among the young in Europe and we were all rooting for Dubček. But the old fogeys in Moscow were having none of it! And so communism too was discredited. Moral of the story: beware of old fogeys!
