Spoken by someone who doesn’t have a clue about cars. Typical how “progressives” live in an idealized, fact-free zone. This would be giving poor people another hell in their lives. Did it ever occur to you that cars — any car — need maintenance? And if it’s an older car, it needs EXPENSIVE maintenance. $200 here, $500 there. (Sure, you can learn to fix it yourself, but how long would that take, and how much in time and tools would it cost? And what happens in the meantime? And you still need to buy parts). Not to mention gas. Not to mention insurance. Not to mention normal wear items like tires. Not to mention how you get RIPPED OFF by mechanics if you don’t know everything about cars inside and out.

40-50 c/mile, that’s what the gov’t says it costs to have a car, and that is, in my experience how much it REALLY costs to own one. If it’s a new car, you pay that in car payments, etc. If it’s an older car, you pay that in repairs, etc. Someone who can’t scrounge enough for a bus fare, someone who doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from, they can afford this? (Not to mention the headaches and the twisting of your brain that goes with it).

Try this again: Max Headroom is a British satire with a Canadian actor as the main character. American TV picked up on this and tried to make it their own. Glen Beck must be livid as he thought he should play Max. The rest of the American “Talking Heads” are just as livid. Max Headroom RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These program are ideologically motivated. They believe that they can use "market-based" "solutions" to fix what is a structural problem. Listening to Larry Summers on Meet The Press was laughable. I recommend Richard Wolff's latest inteview on Real News.

Good point Shelia Velazquez. What a great idea to give those w/o transportation the clunkers – many of which run perfectly well. As a courtroom clerk, I hear many times stories from people who lack transport to job seek beyond the bus route or who lost jobs because they arrived to work late one time too many due to their seriously old, clunked out car breaking down.

Good point #2: most of those taking advantage of the bucks for clunkers program could afford a new car payment anyway. The $4500 given doesn’t go far to purchase a new auto – only another used clunker. So if one can’t afford the rest of the money needed to buy a car (financing and monthly payments), the $4500 won’t do much good. This is just like those damn school vouchers touted as the solution to education woes. The households who need them most don’t have the funds to chip in the rest of the tuition money so giving them even 1/2 or 1/3 of money towards tuition won’t help.

Saddest is that most of the bastards are morons. I refer to the government bastards who are blowing billions on the “cash for clunkers” program.
