The Soviet and American superpowers were semi-detached houses. They propped each other up. Once one fell, the other was condemned to follow. The fall of the Soviet Union was not the end of a process, but the first stage in a process which is still ongoing and which will result in a world as different from the cold war world as the world on either side of WWI. Don't forget two things, though: in 1920, people didn't realise that the world of 1914 had gone forever and a lot of babies were thrown out with the bath water.
