I opted out of this charade early enough, back in the early 80’s – why did the obviously clear-headed, tough-minded Mr. Weil allow himself to pursue and gain a doctorate from such an dispiriting process?

Because education really has little to do with modern day schooling.  I got a doctorate (two) due to the nature of my interests.  It was not motivated by any financial gain.
