I agree with bozh. It truly is that bad.

It is difficult to imagine population here willing to take the risks necessary, over time, to come out on the other side of this.

Maybe as things get less comfortable, people will realize they have nothing left to lose. It is a dangerous game for our leaders to play in crashing the economy . . . no luxuries left to keep us distracted. But maybe that's why engineered viruses and mandatory injections are around the corner. Canada's first to implement bioterror vaccinations.

Maybe we should just party and fuggedaboutit.

don bowlus,
that's how i also see it. US governance is structured like all fascist empires or lands.
But US, on a a scale of one to ten, get's a NINE of a fascist rule. It is structured near-ideally for the plutos.
US wld get a TEN once it starts violence against diametrically opposing fledgling parties.
Nader is safe as long he get's about 1% of votes. But if his party [or is it movement?] starts getting 3,4,5,7% of votes, expect also some violence. tnx

The article has some good points, but is too wordy. Our government is an illusion at all three levels and our elections are meaningless circuses. For many years the President is nothing more than an role playing actor who carries out orders from unseen directors as do the legislators and judges. If any of these steps out of line, elimination by assassination or defamation occurs. No reform is possible because the potential reformers are all corrupt. Our only effective recourse is a constitutional convention.

myles, yes,
let us expect a worse diktat than any previous. But even the best ever wld be issued solely to force palestinians to reject it.
after necessary rejection, politico-media 'elite' goes on a mission to 'prove' to good-hearted and well-meaning americans how stupid and unreasonable palestinians are.

in fact, the main part of the future entire diktat, has already been thumped on the table: j'lem will be united and settlements remain.
the latter command had been tacitly uttered but not less seriouosly than one about j'lem being an undivided 'jewish' city.

Just a quick point to make. True, Obama was against the war (when he had no political power to do anything about it). But the war ended a long time ago; the invasion of a country and the hanging of its leadership is usually such an indication. Obama had NEVER opposed the occupation during the campaign.
'Progressives' who are disappointed over Obama's pro-war positions are as much to blame for the long occupation as any political group that openly supported it. It is they who helped him get elected, not to hold him accountable for his pro-occupation positions.
The same goes for every other position that 'progressives' are disappointed.
Health care to be managed almost exclusively by those very entities that have profited from it and ruined it for all.
Anti-Palestine and Pro-Israel (stopping settlements is no where near a call for the dismantling of all settlements that are illegal and a theft of others' lands and property).
Pro-Wall Street. He pushed the Democrats to vote for the initial bailout. Maybe for the wrong reasons, but the Republicans were the ones who opposed it.

"You can always count on the Democrats to live up to the campaign promises of the Republican Party."

A very cogent article. As an outsider I have long accepted Chomsky's argument that the US political system is a one-party state, of the rich, with two wings, engaged in a fraudulent and cosmetic battle where both sides represent the same interest. We have the same system here in Australia, where the last even marginally reformist, alternative, political ethos, represented by the mildly reformist Whitlam Government of 1972-5 was destroyed by a concerted, vicious and CIA assisted campaign of destabilisation, spearheaded by Murdoch/Moloch's media bestiary. For further evidence of the complete sham of 'capitalist democracy' in the US one need only read 'Indispensible Enemies' by Walter Karp, a really great book.
The first step towards emancipation must be in recognising the reality of our predicament. We live in market fundamentalist economies, where those that own society run society. Democracy in such societies must be a sham. Democracy cannot exist without economic equality, and the grotesque and unprecedented inequality of the current age makes plutocracy, and hence pathocracy (as the rich are venal, wicked and irredeemable)inescapable. To keep the rabble in line, to ensure that they believe in an unbelievable system requires incessant brainwashing and 'dumbing-down'. I realised at high-school that the stuff that was being forced down my throat was illogical, inconsistent, unbelievable and compulsory. Fortunately I had a couple of teachers with enough intelligence and self-respect to point out that the Emperor had no clothes, so I did not fall to believing myself to be deluded. At school, and later, I found it an invariable law that the more intelligent and more morally principled an individual, the less they believed anything said about our society and the 'Western way of Life'. I found that, without exception, those that were 'pro-American' were the worst, and those 'anti-American' the better, without, as I say, variance. I have watched US politics for years, watched the wars of aggression, the torture, the death-squads, the domestic policies of redistribution to the rich, destruction of unions, narrowing of acceptable opinion in the media, mass incarceration of the race and class enemy , the total disinterest in the future as expressed by rampant biosphere destruction and, above all else, the self-deluding lies of 'American beneficence', and marvelled, year after year, as the ever so polite voices of US 'dissent' refuse to see what is plain to every other decent person on the planet. That is that the US, by which I mean its political/business elite and the great apparatus of death and destruction that they have wrought, is the greatest evil that the world has ever seen. And yet, as if incapable of any rational thought, we see the forces of 'progressive' US opinion not only swallow the bilge that Obama, 'house Negro' par excellence and hand-picked and nurtured candidate of Zionism, was the emissary of 'hope' and 'change', but also resolutely refuse to recognise the multifarous symptoms of his treachery as they are shoved in their faces, day after day. All I can say is that self-abnegation of such intensity, lack of self-respect and refusal to scream 'Enough', is clearly pathological, but the rulers rely upon it, and ever have done so.

I am no longer surprised (Or even disappointed) when our elected (And newly elected) politicians turn out to be liars and have no intent on fulfilling their promises. I gave that up after the Bush '02 debacle in
Florida and than again in'06 when I realized votes were mattering one way or the other. What occurs with me now is to be stunned when a real moment, a real person in an elected office leaves the pack and stands alone--Mark Sanford is the prime example at this moment. While he is being pilloried, stoned, ridiculed, made blind by the MSM spotlights, he has shown himself to be very, very human and I admire that. I hope he does not resign; I hope he remains seperate and divorced from his wife and finds real happiness (Something he seems to have missed most of his life). As for Obama, I am not surprised. I am not disappointed. He is slick in rhetoric but no different than Bush and we are going to pay for all our sins of not forcing real change on the system decades ago. I don't fund the Dems or the Republicans but a true Green, third party, is still a dream for me and a lot of us. I still have hope but not from either candidate from either party. Religion and talk will not save our country now. Great article.

plutos, in lands like US, canada, australia, some euro lands are not stupid to allow more than one party.
in US, there is ample proof that US plutos have one party. Serial wars is one proof. Another is reducing red pop by, is it, 95%?
then comes the cia, the greatest terrorist org ever.
no health care, free higher education, right to be informed, etc., offer more proof.
in short, US structure of governance in its essentials does not differ an iota from any other fascist structure of society and governance.

and US can wage serial wars [with more wars to come] precisely because the fascist world demands them.
it just so happens that fascits world comprises 95% of all lands. This fact is also abetting US and other fascists' crimes.tnx bozhidar balkas vancouver
