it is helpful to me to think of the constitution, quran, bible, and torah as books written by biased people making oodles and oodless of 'promises'.
and i evaluate all 'promises' as lies. Politico-priestly ones i find by far more irritating and obnoxious than real-life ones.

even laws contain 'promises'. Some of the tacit promises in their; oops, our laws are that one wld receive fair trial and obtain justice.
and how can one obtain justice if one is judged by 12 people; none of which may be an expert in laws or particular crime a person is accuse of comitting?
it is scary being judged by dozen mad/sad/ignorant people and sentenced by a judge appointed to judgeship by as an iniquitous governance as the one in US.

in connection to this, we may note that along with US vaunted constitution, there was legal slavery, clearing the land of reds, 180 wars, lynchings, segregation, etc.

now we have cases like maher arar, gitmo abductees, fear of uncle sam as so many people use false names or abbreviations when posting comments.
add to this the fact that Bush said: You are with us or against us! That was meant as much for maher, et al, as for any american.
tnx bozhidar balkas vancouver.
PS, as an aside, i believe i am safe from hurt by US or canada because only 0000000000000001% of world pop reads my posts.

Bravo, Ms. Edwards.

"SSP" is itself a wonderful acronym, and when I was probably about your age, in 1978, I gave up working on my opus magum, "The Political Economy of Secrecy - Information, Power and Capitalism."
Mainly, because I'd submitted it to six radical publications in America, from Socialist Revolution in California to Monthly Review in New York, and hadn't got a nibble.

But after 30 years, what seemed ridiculous and oversimplified during the Watergate-and-Ford years has been rendered just simple and deadly accurate, after 30 years of rule by the right wingnuts.

Effective secrecy - defined as absolute secrecy for a long enough time to render ineffective the opposition - has never been so prominent.

The full Political Economy of Secrecy - with one footnote changed in the 21st century - can be read at my LiveJournal blog, by Googling to Yourdad65.

Adequate laws?

Are you kidding? We have more than adequate laws. We are swamped with law. It is

         JUSTICE

that we need.

But justice is a preserve of the people who have the money to either buy it or circumvent it.

So, mcthorogood: Want to start a real revolution?

Then we need to create a system in which people have equal access to justice.

Just imagine with real justice the social security scam would disappear, the health care crisis would cease to be ... illegal wars would dissipate and become a thing of the past.

How do we the people do that? The same way it was done in 1776 ... only this time when we get finished with a set of Articles of Confederation (just like those that were not working for the wealthy) we would crack the back of centralization ... states would block each other just as they did in the period prior to the Constitution ... and the military-industrial-congressional-complex would die for lack of support. The issue for a unicameral congress would be unanimity on national issues, with a priori assent from the legislatures in the states that sent them.

Sure prices would go up, interstate commerce would suffer, and all of that. But, maybe people would be able to work ... and play and live.

Nah ... too much work. It is better to fear ... and be complicit ... and do what we do so well ....

NOTHING!

Another whistleblower in the news.

http://www.citizensforethics.org/node/39968

My heart goes out to people like Richard Barlow, who have the fortitude to not compromise their morality. But, the unfortunate reality today is that careers are ruined when a person blows the whistle. Imagine, if there were adequate laws protecting whistleblowers, people in positions of power would have obey our laws!

RG LG,
we can keep educating. We can urge parents to warn their children not to believe that the US flag represents them as much as the rich folks.
they can point out that the constitution, bible, quran are interpretative writings, written by fallible human beings.

and that writings such as talmud, torah, bible, quran, and constitution are interpreted by priests; while constitution is interpreted by judges, appointed by the people who do not govern equally or fairly for all people.
tnx

The Empire strikes back.

There are moments when I assume that things might improve ... but the reality is that those who say: "It can't happen here" are right ... it has ALREADY happened here. We have been moving steadily toward a police state since I can remember (in my 60's, so, for a while) ... and the DV post just prior to this one causes chills to slide up and down my spine. Yours only amplifies that feeling. Worse, in the face of it all --- just what the hell can we do about it? And then, the ultimate nightmare, there is no escape because the empire has its tentacles everywhere. There is no place to go ... and thus, here is my question again:

Just what the hell are we (you, meaning the readers of DV, and I) going to do about it?
