The pope would build a ghetto alongside opulent Rome to house all the non-catholics if he could.

Obviously the human condition is a political matter and the Vatican needs to be as politically proactive as its Zionist counterpart (and so do the other churches). If the Israelis had cancelled the entire trip so much the better - a PR disaster for them that could have been used to whip them for years to come.

Thanks Mr Nasser for this article. I think you meant May 14th btw.

Stuart Littlewood has written this tribute to Father Manuel Masallam as he retires from his isolated position as Gaza's Catholic priest. He loves and cares for all those imprisoned people, not just the Catholics, and he will be missed. The Pope should have insisted on including Gaza in his itinerary and should have ignored Gaza's oppressors.

Mr Nasser has missed the whole point, although he actually mentions it in the article: "Israel forces his protocol team to drop from the list of his Arab audience in Nazareth the Palestinian mayor of Sukhnin, Mazen Ghanaim, because he rallied against the Israeli war on Gaza" and "Israel recently barred the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Antonio Franco, from Gaza". If you didn't know it already, you now know why the Pope is not going to Gaza! The Israelis won't let him! That what the reference to "security" means! Father Mussalam isn't asking why the Pope isn’t coming to Gaza, he's drawing attention to why! If the Pope insisted on going to Gaza, the Israelis would have cancelled the entire trip. By preventing the Pope from going to Gaza and hindering him in who he can meet, the Israelis have shot themselves in the foot (yet again!). Having picked fights with Switzerland and the EU, Bibi is now bullying the Pope! The beauty of the thing is that if the Israelis had refused the visit, they would have shot themselves in the other foot! Needless to say, whatever he says will be twisted into some sort of attack on Islam, but since we all know that is coming, nobody will be fooled and the Israelis will shoot themselves in the foot again! He is also drawing attention to Israel's 75 000 Catholics, discriminated against like all other Israeli Arabs.

By the way, the Pope is not supposed to be "apolitically balanced". He is the head of the Catholic Church, not the Secretary General of the UN. His job is not to be a neutral diplomat but to advance the interests of the Catholic Church.
