Israel’s existence rests entirely on American brute force and US inability to win these wars undermines its military credibility, but once the wars end, not even the Lobby will be able to claim that the US is still a superpower. On the other hand, every day those wars go on, the US and is a little bit more discredited, and Israel damaged, by the perception, not merely that the wars are being waged in Israel’s interest but that the whole of the American polity has been hijacked and harnessed to the sole service of those interests. That, I think, explains Obama’s dithering over Afghanistan.
