I agree with the article.
I worked in anti-war groups during the 90’s and my faith in the media has never recovered since. Once you know how the system works, how lies and manipulations become fact, how bias is strong, how certains messages are avoided and how unprepared reporters are once they’ve locked in to the official line.

But the current coverage of the middle east is NOT an isolated incident.
Go back to our military involveemnt in Iraq2, Afghanistan, our kidnapping of the president of Haiti, our bombing of yugoslavia, our support for the 10s of thousands of muhajeddins work in Bosnia (3 of the last Al Quaeda leaders in S.Arabia were all Bosnian Holy war veterans, one of them coming back with his bosnian passport and wife), Iraq1 and we have been manipulated and played like fools.
I remember talking to French TV producer Jacques Merlinot who wrote a book on the conspiracy of lies and explaining how open and on the record James Harff from the PR firm of Rudder and Finn when it came to explaining how to get his clients message across to the media and politicians.
I remember taking to the reporter from Ottawa who broke the story about canadian soldiers in the 90’s being in their first officials firefight since god knows when, for over 2 days, where they killed 30+ croatians soldiers that had decimated a village. Canadians soldiers were wounded and received war medals from France for their role in saving other soldiers but the news was covered until Pugliese talked about it years later. Why? The Campbell govt didnt want to make the croatians to seem the bad guys because it would have complicated canadians perceptions. When I asked a newspaper editor why this story wasnt covered, I was told that David Pugliese had broken the story and that it wouldnt be right for them steal his thunder.
It seems once you break a story, no one else is allowed to cover it.

I remember Scott Taylor, canada’s only true war correspondent and a jarhead who runs Esprit de Corps magazine telling how canadian broadcasters where joking with him that they would have to deprogram him because his reports from the field in the Balkans where diametrically opposed, therefore unusable, to what other reporters where filling from cities hundreds of miles away thanks to the informative press releases the military would hand out.
Taylor didnt follow the script.

I give credit to great canadians like David Orchard, Scott Taylor, David Fennario, Maude Barlow, Richard Sanders, Michael Mandel, Michel Chossudovsky and others from keeping us from the insidious groupthink.

Without being condescending, I often wonder if I wouldnt just be happy not knowing. Taking the red pill is so much easier.

The biggest problem with the Canadian media is the same problem with Canadian programming in general: It has become Americanized. Canadian TV used to be basically modeled after British and European programming. This was twelve, thirteen years ago. I remember it well, because I grew up living on the Canadian border. Canadian TV was loaded with quality shows, for the most part. A lot of British comedies and so on. The best part was that Canada had no idiotic hang-ups about nudity. Every night after eleven o'clock, CTV became adult programming. They had no qualms about nudity or "adult" language. As I said, the Canadians still had a very European point of view toward their media not so long ago.

Now, of course, all that has changed. The fraudulently moral and advertisement-mad American influence sleazed its way into the picture, and now CTV and CBC are just a couple more American stations, basically. Why any people would want to emulate our stupidity is beyond me. Endless, mindless, intellectually insulting advertising; no more swearing or nudity (now we have to see a maple leaf with a goddamn "14+" in the corner of the screen at the beginning of evry single show); and of course, Canadian Idol. Needless to say, I'm pretty disgusted with the Canadians. But American money talks, I suppose.

So, keeping up with this trend, American censorship and gross omission of fact seems to be creeping into the Canadian way. This is frightening, because it means there's a hefty amount of political influence there, as well. It hasn't reached quite the level of our news (although blatantly lying to people, about everything, seems to be a uniquely American thing). The National is a very good show, as is The Hour. Hopefully, the state of Canadian media doesn't get worse.

I agree with the article and the above comments.

I've always been a fan of what the CBC does well, but 'news' which might depart from the American official line isn't one of them. It's as if there are no journalists anymore (well, those named above and then some) just wire-readers and repeaters and stenographers.

I watch CTV National news usually, and it's no different. Brave troops are fighting for freedom in Afghanistan (that is by propping up warlords, druglords, and the poppy trade so that the US can defend a new pipeline). We're defending women and children, but recently Canadian troops were told to shut up about the rape (sometimes resulting in murder) of young Afghan boys by Afghan 'Freedom Fighters'.

The other day on CNN (I know! I watch in small increments 'cause it feels so good when I stop) P'litzer Blitzer and 'the best political team') were discussing Iraq. The neo-con reporter referred to Saddam 'kicking out the UN inspectors'. No one batted an eye. Not the 'liberal' 'journalist', and certainly not P'litzer. To report the truth, one first has to give a damn about it.

Not in any Asper owned media that I've ever heard of...
