What is presented in this article is generally correct. However, the most complete analysis I have heard on this subject and current situation came from none other than the person who many consider to be the world's premier expert on the Israel/Palestine conflict: Norman Finkelstein. In his most recent article "Foiling Another Palestinian "Peace Offensive": Behind the bloodbath in Gaza," he details how Israel has systematically destroyed any political movements that are both a) unifying among the Palestinians and b) in favor of the two state solution. Any such movement, from a Zionist perspective, is seen as a threat to Israel's illegal gradual annexation of the West Bank. Hamas was dangerously close to being both and therefore needed to be taken out.

Obviously the massacre in Gaza has nothing to do with a few ineffectual homemade rockets. This was a "war" of choice by Israel. They planned it six months ago. They intentionally broke what had been a successful ceasefire on Nov. 4. Then all they had to do was wait for the inevitable retaliation in order to carry out their plan of destroying an elected government and further radicalizing the population that were just too close to being receptive to the International consensus of the two-state solution and lasting peace.
